District officials say the student does not pose a known threat to students or staff.
According to FOX 2, school officers escorted the student without incident after officials located the weapon and confiscated it during the screening process. North County Police Cooperative officers then arrived on campus and took the student into custody. A district spokesperson said student and staff safety remain the district's highest priority, and the district plans to work closely with its security team and law enforcement partners to review existing safety and security procedures.

The security overhaul followed a major governance shift for Normandy Schools Collaborative, which returned to full local control under an elected Board of Education on June 30, 2024, ending a decade of state oversight under a state-appointed Joint Executive Governing Board that had governed the district since 2014, per the district's own account.
This is not the first time a firearm has surfaced on Normandy High School grounds. In January 2020, a 17-year-old student was arrested on campus by school security and North County Police Cooperative officers after bringing a concealed firearm that police determined had been stolen out of Bellefontaine Neighbors, KSDK reported at the time. In August 2022, a 42-year-old man was arrested and charged with felony offenses after a fight broke out in the Normandy High School parking lot following a varsity football game, leading to gunfire in the parking area, KSDK also reported.
