Six blocks of downtown Madison will fill with music, food and more than 225 vendors on Saturday, October 3, as the borough throws its annual Bottle Hill Day street festival. This year's edition carries a fitting theme, “Celebrating America's 250th,” and organizers say the event will mark its 51st year running.
The festival dates back to 1974, when it was first established by then-Mayor Elizabeth Baumgartner, according to the Borough of Madison. Over five decades it has grown into a sprawling street fair with four stages of live music, three amusement areas, sidewalk sales and food vendors spread across downtown. Last year's edition drew families like Madison residents Oliver Darling, 7, and his 4-year-old sister Juliette, who rode a teacup-style ride together during the festival, as reported by Madison Eagle.
Attendance estimates for the festival vary. The borough's page states it typically draws between 10,000 and 20,000 people, while a separate page from the borough's Downtown Development Commission puts the figure at more than 10,000 attendees. Either way, the Downtown Development Commission, which organizes promotions and supports special events throughout the year, describes Bottle Hill Day as a festival celebrating the town's hometown feel and its downtown business district.
Car Show, Beer Garden And a Shuttle Loop
The Madison Chamber of Commerce and Madison P.B.A. #92 will host their popular annual car show alongside the festival, and the event's beer garden returns for its 13th year on Kings Road. For anyone hoping to skip the parking hunt, the borough will run a park-and-ride shuttle continuously between the Madison Community Pool parking lot and the town center from 9:15 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Behind the scenes, the festival depends on borough workers who spend the day keeping things running. Last year, Tim Trimble, a meter reader with the Madison electric utility, was spotted replacing a trash bag during the festivities — a small but telling reminder that municipal employees help make Bottle Hill Day happen year after year, the Madison Eagle reported.
Madison EV Expo Set for Oct. 3
The Madison EV Expo is listed for October 3, 2026, on driveelectricmonth.org. The fifth annual expo coincides with Bottle Hill Day. Bottle Hill Day's overall draw has historically been estimated at 10,000 to 20,000 attendees each year.
At the 2025 festival, American Legion Post 43, based in Florham Park, promoted its organization, with commander Andrew Dutton and member Bob Jennings, both of Madison, among those representing the post. Physical therapy student Juston Behnke, who works with Madison-based Better With Physical Therapy, and Madison teen Rushil Patel, 13, who measured how high he could jump at the festival last year, also attended the 2025 event.
Museum Turns Back the Clock 250 Years
A few blocks away, the Museum of Early Trades & Crafts is staging its own special edition of Bottle Hill Day the same day, transforming the museum grounds and surrounding area into 18th-century New Jersey, according to Morristown Green. The colonial-themed program will commemorate the nation's 250th anniversary with demonstrations of basket weaving, cooking, spinning and other traditional crafts. Visitors will also get the chance to hear from guests portraying George and Martha Washington on the museum lawn and along Green Village Road.
Between the music stages, the car show, the beer garden and the historical programming down the street, Bottle Hill Day is shaping up to be a full day of downtown Madison tradition. Whether it draws closer to 10,000 or 20,000 people, organizers are betting the mix of new attractions like the EV Expo and old standbys like the Cook Avenue stage and Central Avenue food court will keep the 51-year-old festival going strong.
