A 37-year-old man was shot and killed Thursday night near the intersection of Pierce and Wright streets in Milwaukee's Riverwest neighborhood. Police are investigating the shooting. The shooting happened around 8:45 p.m., and the victim died at the scene, according to police.
Milwaukee police are investigating the shooting and working to determine what led up to the gunfire, as reported by WISN Channel 12 Milwaukee. A Previous Shooting Near Pierce and Wright
A previous shooting was reported near Pierce and Wright. On October 5, 2025, a 25-year-old man was shot and injured near the same intersection, one of five separate shooting incidents that day across the city, per Fox 6 Milwaukee. Seven weeks before this latest killing, an overnight shooting on July 27 left a 57-year-old man dead near Locust and Holton streets, also in Riverwest, a case Hoodline detailed at the time.

Citywide Homicides Down, But Riverwest Still Bleeding
The killing comes even as Milwaukee's overall violent crime numbers have improved sharply this year. As of July 7, the city had recorded 51 homicides in 2026, compared with 71 during the same period in 2025, a 30% decrease, according to CBS 58. Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman reported in July that the department achieved a 98% clearance rate for homicides in the first half of the year, compared to just 41% for non-fatal shootings.
Milwaukee County District Attorney Kent Lovern has noted that felony violent crime referrals are being charged at the county's highest rate in over a decade. Still, the Badger Institute has reported that homicides rose in Milwaukee and fell in the rest of Wisconsin, according to the Badger Institute.
City Targets Hot Spots as Death Toll Climbs

The case remains under investigation. For now, the victim's identity has not been released, and investigators have not said whether they have identified a motive or a suspect.
