A man was left in critical condition Sunday afternoon after a woman shot him just outside the Memphis Police Department's Austin Peay Station, with officers responding to the call just after 4:30 p.m. before the victim was rushed to the hospital by private vehicle.
According to WMC Action News 5, Memphis Police investigated the shooting outside the precinct, located at 3430 Austin Peay Highway in the Raleigh neighborhood. Preliminary police information indicates the woman shot the man outside the station before leaving the scene. Officers later located and detained her, and the station's report notes the man and woman were in a relationship.
Police told the outlet the incident appears to be isolated, and said they will release new information as it becomes available. It remains unclear whether formal criminal charges have been filed, whether a firearm was recovered at the scene, or whether security footage from the surrounding campus captured the shooting.
A Precinct That Doubles as a Civic Hub
The Austin Peay Station, also called the North Precinct, replaced the former Old Allen Station and now anchors a stretch of northern Memphis that goes well beyond routine police business. Per the City of Memphis, the department organizes its Uniform Patrol Division into nine station precincts across two districts, and Austin Peay operates in District Two alongside Appling Farms, Crump, North Main, and Tillman Stations.
The same building also functions as one of five satellite court locations run by the Memphis Municipal Court Clerk's office, where residents handle citations and traffic fees. It sits within the Raleigh Town Center campus, a municipal redevelopment site that includes a Memphis Public Library branch, a skate park, and walking trails immediately adjacent to the police facility, according to Team211.
Not the First Time a Gunshot Victim Has Sought Out Police
Sunday's shooting echoes a similar case Hoodline reported in November 2024, when a woman shot multiple times was driven directly to the department's Raines Station precinct by private vehicle before being rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Emergency transport by private vehicle to a police precinct or fire station during a shooting is not unusual in Memphis, based on prior reporting.
If the man's injuries qualify as an aggravated assault under Tennessee law, the case could carry significant weight in court. Tennessee Code Annotated § 39-13-102 classifies an intentional or knowing assault involving a deadly weapon or causing serious bodily injury as a Class C felony, punishable by three to 15 years in prison and fines up to $10,000, according to Justia Law. Because police say the man and woman were in a relationship, Tennessee's domestic violence statutes could also come into play; such charges trigger mandatory bail hold considerations and potential firearm prohibitions upon conviction, per the Brooks Law Firm.
A Shooting That Bucks a Broader Downward Trend
The incident lands amid a period of falling gun violence citywide. Memphis recorded 643 shooting incidents in 2025, a 38% decrease from 2024's total of more than 1,000, according to police figures reported by the Memphis Shelby Crime Commission. Citywide Part I major violent crime fell another 36% year-to-date through the second quarter of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025, with aggravated assaults dropping 30%, per Memphis Police Department quarterly data.
Even so, a shooting unfolding steps from a working police station and a public library campus tends to rattle a community differently than one on an isolated street corner. The Austin Peay corridor has already seen other flashpoints this year, including a separate Walmart lot gun discharge nearby, and MPD's Austin Peay Task Force has also been tied to a recent Frayser beating investigation. Police have not indicated whether Sunday's shooting is connected to any prior activity in the area, and they have described it only as an isolated incident for now.
