A man found bleeding outside a Vista convenience store early Wednesday morning has died, and the San Diego County Sheriff's Department has opened a homicide investigation into his death. Someone at the Arco AM/PM near Vista Way and Monte Mar Road alerted officials around 3:15 a.m. after spotting the injured man in front of the store's door.
Deputies arrived and located a bleeding man at the scene, according to 10News. Life-saving efforts failed to save him, and he later died from his injuries. Both the nature of his injuries and the circumstances that led to the incident remain unclear, and the investigation is ongoing.
Sheriff's Homicide Unit Takes Over the Case
Vista is an incorporated San Diego County city that contracts with the Sheriff's Department for public safety services. The department provides specialized services to Vista, including homicide investigations, according to the North County Daily Star. The Sheriff's Homicide Unit is handling this case.
The Sheriff's Homicide Unit is asking anyone with information about the death to contact investigators at (858) 285-6330, or to submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477, which can offer cash rewards for information leading to an arrest, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.
Recent Vista Death Investigations Offer Context
This is not the first time a death outside a Vista business has forced investigators to build a case from limited initial evidence. In April, Sheriff's homicide detectives arrested 26-year-old Arturo Garcia Morales on murder charges after an autopsy determined that a man found deceased on a Vista vacant lot had suffered head trauma causing a fatal brain bleed — a case in which the victim initially showed no obvious outward trauma at the scene, per the Sheriff's Department.
Just last week, the same Homicide Unit was called out again after a 45-year-old inmate at the Vista Detention Facility died in an apparent self-inflicted hanging inside his cell, a case Hoodline covered in a recent report. The Citizens' Law Enforcement Review Board was also notified of that incident.
No charges have been filed in connection with Wednesday's death.
A City Also Dealing With Fire Risk and Civic Milestones
The investigation lands in a city that has had an eventful September. Earlier in the month, emergency managers set up a temporary shelter at Vista High School during a localized brush fire near Vale Terrace Drive that forced neighborhood evacuations, with notifications dispatched through the county's Genasys Protect system. On a lighter note, community advocates in Vista have been pushing plans for a permanent skateboarding museum and public skate park, an effort that debuted with a photo exhibition at a local brewery and has drawn support from city council members.
For now, the death outside the Arco AM/PM remains an open case with no confirmed cause and no named suspects. The Sheriff's Department has not released the identity of the man who died, and investigators continue to ask the public for any information that could help determine what happened before deputies arrived early Wednesday.
