A man is dead after a shooting broke out late Saturday night in southwest Oklahoma City, and police say one person is now in custody as detectives try to piece together what happened. The shooting occurred around 11:45 p.m. near South May Avenue and Southwest 59th Street, according to police.
One man died following the late-night shooting, according to police, as reported by News 9. The Oklahoma City Police Department is investigating the cause of the shooting, and no further details about the victim or the person in custody have been released.
A Stretch of Southwest OKC With a Violent Past
The intersection sits in a part of southwest Oklahoma City that has seen serious violence before. Back in September 2020, a fatal shooting during a home invasion happened on the 3100 block of SW 59th Street near South May Avenue, an incident that involved multiple suspects and gunfire at an apartment complex and led to a major OKCPD homicide investigation, according to CrimeSolversCentral.
The area has also drawn police and Hoodline attention in recent days for unrelated incidents. A separate road rage crash case originating near SW 59th Street and Highway 152 has since been sent to the Oklahoma County District Attorney's Office for possible charges.

Oklahoma's Stand Your Ground statute, 21 O.S. § 1289.25, also looms over any fatal shooting investigation in the state. That law removes the duty to retreat and allows the use of deadly force when a person reasonably believes it is necessary to prevent death or serious bodily harm while lawfully present somewhere, though the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals has noted that statutory immunity does not extend to someone who is actively committing an illegal act at the time of the incident.
