A man who was once charged with first-degree murder has pleaded guilty in connection with a 2024 shooting that killed a woman and left an 11-year-old girl fighting for her life. Je'On Davis entered his plea this week in a case that began with a street fight in front of a home on Quinn Avenue and ended with a woman shot dead in the road.
According to Action News 5, Davis pleaded guilty to criminal attempted aggravated assault and being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun. A separate account from Yahoo News states that Davis entered his guilty plea on Sept. 23 and reports that the indictment charged him with voluntary manslaughter and firearm possession.
The shooting happened shortly before 7 p.m. on March 14, 2024, in the 1300 block of Quinn Avenue near Pillow Street, when Memphis Police responded to reports of gunfire. Officers arrived to find three women and an 11-year-old girl suffering from gunshot wounds, per Action News 5. Tamara Plummer was pronounced dead at the scene, while the two other women sustained what were described as minor injuries and were taken to a local hospital.
An 11-Year-Old Caught in the Crossfire
The girl was rushed to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in critical condition, according to Action News 5's reporting on the case. Fox13 Memphis separately reported that the girl was hospitalized with critical injuries, and the outlet noted the shooting stemmed from a street fight in front of a home on Quinn Avenue involving children and Plummer.
Investigators say the violence stemmed from a fight involving neighborhood teenagers, including Davis's daughter, and that video footage showed several teenagers fighting in the street. Plummer reportedly attempted to intervene and break up the fight before the gunfire erupted, per Action News 5's account of the case.
Surveillance Footage Led to Murder Charge
Fox13 Memphis reported that investigators found security footage showing Davis walking to his SUV parked in his driveway across the street to retrieve a handgun before returning to confront Plummer. WREG reported that, according to an officer's affidavit, Davis admitted shooting Plummer three times before walking away and throwing the weapon into a nearby yard. Davis was taken into custody shortly after the shooting on Quinn Avenue.
He was initially charged with first-degree murder and being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun, the station's report noted. Davis was later indicted on Feb. 14, 2025, on charges of voluntary manslaughter and convicted felon in possession of a firearm, and he had been out on a $30,000 bond he posted on May 3, 2024, according to the same Yahoo News report.
A Contested Criminal History
WREG reported that police described Davis as a felon with a 2016 conviction for aggravated battery in Kansas City, Kansas.
Destiney Plummer, the victim's daughter, was also arrested following the altercation and was charged with reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon, per WREG's reporting. She reportedly told investigators that a gun she was holding discharged accidentally, and she was later released on bond.
The case remains a stark reminder of how a dispute among children on a residential street escalated into gunfire that claimed a mother's life and left a young girl hospitalized.
