A man was shot and killed inside an apartment building in the 3900 block of Willow Avenue early Saturday morning, and Kansas City police say no suspect is in custody as detectives work to piece together what happened. Officers were dispatched to the area just before 2 a.m. and found the victim suffering from gunshot wounds inside the building.
Officers rendered aid to the wounded man and called for emergency medical services, but KCFD medics pronounced him deceased at the scene, according to KSHB 41 Kansas City. The Kansas City, Missouri Police Department is now investigating the killing as a homicide, and detectives and crime scene technicians have been canvassing the scene for witnesses, reviewing surveillance footage and recovering physical evidence. Investigators are still working to determine what led up to the shooting, and as of Saturday morning, no arrests had been announced.
A Neighborhood With a Troubled Recent History
The shooting unfolded in a stretch of Willow Avenue that has seen gun violence before. The 3900 and 4000 blocks include the Villa Park apartment complex, where Kansas City police investigated a shooting in November 2025 that left a child injured, according to a report from KMBC 9. The relationship between that incident and Saturday's homicide is unknown.
The location also sits within KCPD's East Patrol Division. The division logged 36 homicides in 2026 through September 4, according to Kansas City Missouri Police Department data, compared with 37 recorded during the same stretch of 2025 — a slight decline that mirrors the pattern seen citywide.
Citywide Homicides Trending Downward in 2026
Kansas City has recorded 86 homicides so far in 2026 as of September 4, down from 111 during the same period last year, per KCPD figures. Firearms were used in 71 of those 86 killings, continuing to account for the overwhelming majority of deadly violence in the city. The department's tally follows a 2025 that closed with 139 total homicides.
The department is also preparing for a leadership change, as the Board of Police Commissioners searches for a new chief following Chief Stacey Graves' announced retirement.
Potential Charges Under Missouri Law
Should a suspect eventually be identified and charged, Missouri law would govern the case. The investigation remains ongoing.
