A man was found shot in the street on South 27th Street in Louisville's Russell neighborhood just before 3 a.m. Monday, and Louisville Metro Police are still investigating what happened. The shooting occurred near two starkly different neighborhood landmarks: Club Cedar Bar, a venue with its own history of gun violence, and the Norton Healthcare Sports and Learning Center.
According to WLKY, MetroSafe reported that a man was found shot in the street, and officials said he was not taken to the hospital. WLKY reported that it had reached out to the Louisville Metro Police Department for more information but had not received a response as of publication.
A Bar With Its Own Violent Past
The shooting's proximity to Club Cedar Bar is notable given the venue's recent history. In October 2025, Louisville Metro Alcoholic Beverage Control issued an emergency suspension of the bar's liquor license after 45-year-old Andrew Cochran was shot in the head and killed in the bar's parking lot, according to WHAS11. That wasn't an isolated incident — the station also reported that Club Cedar had previously been the site of a November 2024 fatal double shooting that led to a murder arrest.
The block itself isn't new to gun violence either. In August 2023, Louisville Metro Police responded to the 600 block of South 27th Street after a double shooting left two men injured, with officers locating both victims wounded before they were transported for medical care, per WHAS11's earlier reporting. Russell falls under the jurisdiction of LMPD's First Division, headquartered at 416 North 29th Street, which also patrols Downtown, Portland, and Phoenix Hill.
A Pattern of Shootings in September
Monday's shooting adds to a string of gun violence incidents in Russell this month. Just eight days earlier, two men suffered gunshot wounds in a Friday night shooting on West Market Street in the neighborhood, with no immediate suspects identified. And on September 22, police arrested a 29-year-old man in connection with a September shooting in Russell's Esquire Alley that injured four people, including a teenager.
The recent violence comes despite a major federal crackdown targeting the area. Federal and local law enforcement announced in September that 52 people were indicted following Operation Silent Hammer, a 60-day undercover operation focused heavily on the Russell and Park DuValle neighborhoods that recovered 160 firearms, including 42 illegal machine gun conversion devices.
Citywide Numbers Show Improvement
The localized violence stands in contrast to broader citywide trends. Preliminary Louisville Metro Police Department statistics through mid-September 2026 show homicides fell 24% year-to-date to 63 incidents, while non-fatal shooting victims dropped 21% to 159 compared to the same period in 2025.
Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg reported in July that homicides dropped 22% and non-fatal shootings fell 28% across 2025 under the city's Safe Louisville community violence reduction plan, which combines community violence intervention programs with targeted enforcement. Yet Russell continues to see incidents that cut against those citywide gains, including an August case in which a grand jury declined to indict two men in a Russell man's killing, leaving the family without answers.
