A man was shot in the back Sunday night in Louisville's Russell neighborhood and rushed to the hospital, with police offering no update on his condition as the investigation continues. LMPD First Division officers responded to the 2800 block of West Chestnut Street shortly after 8:15 p.m. and found the victim before he was taken for treatment.
According to WLKY, officers arrived at the scene and discovered a man who had been shot in the back. The man was hospitalized at UofL Hospital, which operates the region's primary Level 1 trauma center. Authorities have not released details on the man's condition following the shooting.
The case has been handed to the LMPD Non-Fatal Shooting Unit, which operates within the department's Patrol Bureau under an Assistant Chief of Police. Shooting Falls Within First Division's West Louisville Patrol Area
The 2800 block of West Chestnut Street sits within the jurisdiction of LMPD's First Division, headquartered on North 29th Street, which patrols downtown Louisville along with the Russell, Portland, Butchertown, and Phoenix Hill neighborhoods, per Louisville Metro PD. LMPD divides Louisville Metro into eight patrol divisions total. The shooting comes just over a week after Hoodline reported on a nearby double shooting on West Market Street, also in the Russell neighborhood.
Federal Sweep Targeted Neighborhood Weeks Earlier
The shooting also follows closely on the heels of Operation Silent Hammer, a 60-day undercover operation led by the ATF alongside more than 300 law enforcement officers that focused heavily on the Russell and Park DuValle neighborhoods. The operation resulted in 52 indictments and the seizure of 160 firearms, according to Hoodline's earlier reporting.
Should investigators identify and charge a suspect, Kentucky law treats intentionally causing serious physical injury with a firearm as First-Degree Assault, a Class B felony, according to Adams Law. The statute carries a penalty of 10 to 20 years in prison, and Kentucky law defines serious physical injury as one creating a substantial risk of death or prolonged health impairment.
Citywide Shootings Trend Down, But West Louisville Bears Concentrated Toll
The incident lands amid a broader pattern of declining gun violence citywide. Hoodline reported that non-fatal shooting incidents fell 25%, from 166 to 125, in a same-period comparison. Louisville Metro Government demographic records covering 2020 through 2025 also show that 77% of all gunshot wound victims in the city were Black, over 80% were male, and 56% were between 18 and 35 years old.
The decline comes as Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg's five-year Safe Louisville initiative, launched in 2025, aims to reduce violent crime by at least 15% annually through 2030 across prevention, intervention, and enforcement strategies, as detailed by WHAS11.
