A man in his 30s was shot in the leg early Monday morning in the 300 block of McKinley Avenue on San Antonio's South Side. He told officers that two men approached him. San Antonio police say the shooting happened around 3 a.m., and the men ran from the area.
The victim was taken to a hospital, where he was treated for a gunshot wound to the leg that police say is not expected to be life-threatening, per KSAT.
No Arrests, No Motive Yet Identified
As of Monday, no arrests had been made and investigators were still working to determine what led to the shooting, KSAT reports.
Under Texas Penal Code § 22.02, firing a weapon at another person during an assault is classified as aggravated assault with a deadly weapon — a second-degree felony carrying two to 20 years in prison and fines up to $10,000, according to Flatiron Legal Advisors. Because firearms are categorized as per se deadly weapons under Texas Penal Code § 1.07(a)(17), prosecutors would not need to prove an intent to kill or permanent disfigurement to secure a conviction if the shooters are ever identified and charged, the firm notes.
Third Leg Shooting Near South Side Motels This Month
The McKinley Avenue shooting marks at least the third non-fatal leg shooting reported in the area this month. Earlier in September, an 18-year-old woman was hospitalized after being shot in the leg outside a motel in the 1100 block of Roosevelt Avenue, Hoodline previously reported, in a case that stemmed from an argument.
San Antonio Police Department SAFFE officers have been working directly with business owners along nearby corridors like Pleasanton Road, consulting on measures such as improved lighting to reduce crime risks, according to KSAT. The outreach reflects a broader push to address public safety along South Side commercial strips where motels and late-night foot traffic converge.
Citywide Violent Crime Has Fallen for Years
The incident comes even as San Antonio's overall violent crime numbers have trended sharply downward. Citywide violent street crime fell 21.1% in 2025 compared to the prior year following the rollout of the city's Violent Crime Reduction Plan, developed with University of Texas at San Antonio criminologists, according to a report presented to the City Council's Public Safety Committee and covered by the San Antonio Report. The same targeted hot-spot policing strategy produced a 63.2% drop in violent street crime across 30 to 35 designated high-crime locations during 60-day intervention periods in 2025, researchers found.
Homicides have also declined for three consecutive years, with 105 recorded in 2025 compared to 127 in 2024, according to SAPD records analyzed by KSAT.
For now, police continue to seek information on the two men who fled the scene near McKinley Avenue, and no arrests have been announced.
