MPD has also designated the areas surrounding the Starburst intersection, including portions of Maryland Avenue, Bladensburg Road, and Benning Road NE, as official Drug Free Zones, giving police heightened enforcement authority around the commercial plazas and transit stops that cluster there. The designation is meant to give officers more tools in a high-activity area that has drawn repeated police response this year.
Residents Already Pushing Back on Late-Night Business
In September, a protest was proposed against the Class B license renewal for the Convenience & Carry Out at 1601 Benning Road NE, while a committee might recommend a protest as early as October, according to Capitol Hill Corner. Concerns included criminal activity, MPD engagement, traffic, public safety, and business hours.
