A dispute outside the Saks Fifth Avenue flagship store turned violent Monday evening when a 21-year-old man was stabbed in the arm and torso, with his attacker speeding away in a black BMW before police could make an arrest. The stabbing happened near the department store on Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, according to police, and the victim was taken to a local hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.
The attack, reported at around 7:25 p.m., started as a dispute between the victim and the attacker before it escalated into a stabbing, according to PIX11. The suspect fled to an unknown location, and as of the outlet's reporting, investigators had made no arrests. The 1924-built Saks flagship at 611 Fifth Avenue, a designated New York City Landmark since 1984, sits between 49th and 50th Streets facing Rockefeller Center, meaning the confrontation played out along one of Manhattan's busiest retail blocks.
A Fourth Bladed Attack in Midtown Since August
The stabbing outside Saks falls within the jurisdiction of the NYPD's Midtown North Precinct, which is headquartered at 306 West 54th Street and also covers Rockefeller Plaza, St. Patrick's Cathedral, and Radio City Music Hall. It marks at least the fourth knife attack reported across Midtown's commercial corridors in less than a month. On the same day as the Saks stabbing, Hoodline reported that a 35-year-old man was stabbed in the head during a morning platform dispute at the Times Square-42nd Street subway station before his attacker fled into the transit complex.
Two weeks before that, Hoodline reported a 19-year-old man was repeatedly stabbed in what police described as an unprovoked attack inside a Midtown McDonald's, part of what the outlet called a noticeable cluster of blade violence in the area's commercial hubs throughout August. And on August 10, a 19-year-old man was stabbed twice in the back and slashed during a Sunday afternoon dispute along 42nd Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues — just blocks from the Saks flagship — with two persons of interest held afterward.
Earlier Violence Along the Same Corridor
Midtown's retail spine has seen fatal knife violence this year as well. CBS New York reported that a 39-year-old man died in May after being stabbed in the face, chest, and back outside a restaurant on 43rd Street between Broadway and Sixth Avenue in Times Square, with three male suspects fleeing eastbound. Further back, Patch reported that a man was stabbed during a daytime robbery near 32nd Street and Fifth Avenue in April 2025, showing the corridor's history of daylight blade attacks predates this year's cluster.
Citywide numbers help frame why these individual incidents keep drawing attention. Mid-2026 crime analyses of NYPD CompStat data found felony assaults across New York City remained more than 40% above 2019 pre-pandemic baselines, even as overall felony complaints saw modest declines, according to Building Security Services. Whether the Saks victim and his attacker knew each other, or whether the confrontation was a random street dispute, remains unclear based on available reporting.
