A 67-year-old Marco Island man is dead after his motorcycle collided with a pickup truck at the intersection of State Road 951 and East Elkcam Circle Friday morning. The crash happened around 7:40 a.m. as the man rode his 2022 Harley-Davidson north on SR 951 and attempted to turn left onto Elkcam Circle directly in front of an oncoming truck.
According to the WINK News, the motorcyclist was riding in the left-turn lane when a 33-year-old Naples man driving a 2019 Toyota Tacoma south in the inside lane struck the right side of the motorcycle. Troopers said the motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet. He suffered critical injuries in the crash.
Marco Island Police and Fire Rescue units responded to the scene, and the intersection was closed after the crash, according to the Marco Island Police Department. SR 951 serves as the main vehicular artery connecting Marco Island to the mainland.
Rider Flown to Trauma Center in Fort Myers
The injured motorcyclist was transported to Gulf Coast Medical Center in Fort Myers, where he was later pronounced dead. The Tacoma driver was not injured in the crash.
The crash remains under investigation.
Why the Rider Was Legally Unhelmeted
Although the motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet, Florida law permits riders 21 and older to operate a motorcycle without one if they carry at least $10,000 in medical benefits insurance, according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. The state repealed its universal helmet mandate for adult riders in 2000. Separately, Florida also requires motorcycle operators to wear eye protection unless riding in an enclosed cab and to hold a valid motorcycle endorsement, per the Florida Department of Transportation.
Federal research offers grim context for unhelmeted riders in high-impact collisions. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has found that helmets are approximately 37% effective at preventing fatal injuries to motorcycle operators in crashes, underscoring the elevated risk unhelmeted riders face in intersection collisions like the one on Elkcam Circle.
