A routine traffic stop in Marrero turned into an hours-long standoff early Wednesday after a man bolted from his vehicle and disappeared into a wooded area off Lapalco Boulevard, drawing dozens of Jefferson Parish deputies, an armored vehicle, and clouds of green smoke to the tree line. Details about what happened next, including whether anyone was injured, remained unclear as the search continued, with only a handful of officers still in the area as of 12:30 p.m., and few details have been released about who the man is.
The operation began shortly after 4 a.m. Wednesday, according to Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office spokesperson Jason Rivarde, as cited by NOLA.com. Deputies had pulled the man over for a traffic stop before he ran on foot into the woods, prompting the sheriff's office to deploy several dozen deputies, including its SWAT team, to surround the area. Armed officers in bulletproof vests and other ballistic gear fanned out near the intersection of Lapalco Boulevard and Westwood Drive, some pointing their weapons toward the tree line as they searched for the man.
Smoke Canisters and an Armored Truck at the Scene
Local residents watched the standoff unfold from a distance. Gabrielle Dunn told the outlet she spotted an armored law enforcement truck with armed deputies standing on top of it as the search intensified.
