Matt Damon and Jimmy Kimmel have a long-running faux feud built around Damon’s appearances on the show. A Variety report also covers the pair’s on-air rivalry.
The Boston-New York rivalry was on display at Monday’s Brooklyn taping: Damon wore a Red Sox hat and shouted “Go Sox!” as Kimmel discussed Boston’s upcoming game against the Yankees, The Boston Globe reported. The audience first cheered when the camera showed Damon, then jeered, to Kimmel’s delight.
The Globe described Damon’s appearance as a surprise during a week of Brooklyn tapings; the show usually films in Los Angeles. Damon, a Cambridge native and Oscar-winning actor, brought the rivalry into the episode as the Red Sox prepared for a wild-card postseason matchup with the Yankees that week, according to the report.

The teams also met in the 2021 AL wild-card game. According to Sporting News, Boston defeated New York and advanced to face the Rays. The result made the rivalry matchup consequential: the winner moved on to the next round.
