A new Chinese restaurant is open for business on Knoxville's downtown square. Mei's Kitchen celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony last Thursday, moving into the storefront at 221 East Main Street that once housed Deng's Garden.
The Knoxville Chamber of Commerce organized the ribbon cutting, which drew restaurant staff, family members, community members, and Chamber board members, according to KNIA-KRLS. The Chamber regularly organizes such ceremonies for new and expanding businesses, providing ceremonial scissors and spreading the word through local media outlets, per the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce's official guidelines.
Mei's Kitchen serves a large variety of Chinese dishes, including Orange Chicken, Sesame Chicken, General Tso's, and Lo Mein, according to the restaurant's own listing. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner Tuesday through Sunday, running from 11:00 AM to 8:30 PM and closing entirely on Mondays.
A Storefront Changes Hands After Retirement
The 221 East Main Street space had sat as Deng's Garden until earlier in 2026, when local discussion on Facebook indicated the previous owner retired and relocated to Pella, opening the door for new management to take over. That transition cleared the way for Mei's Kitchen to move into an already-established restaurant location in the heart of downtown Knoxville.
The changeover is part of a broader pattern of turnover and reinvestment along the downtown square. Just a few months earlier, the Chamber hosted a ribbon cutting for a remodeled Lucky Buffet at 114 S. 2nd Street, celebrating the restaurant's return after a complete interior overhaul following 14 years in business, as reported by KNIA-KRLS in June.
Downtown Dining Cluster Keeps Growing
Mei's Kitchen now sits within a dense concentration of downtown eateries, joining establishments such as Casa Grande Mexican Restaurant at 110 East Main Street, according to Travel Iowa's destination listings. The Chamber has also been organizing its annual Living Windows event, a longstanding downtown tradition of business window displays and holiday activities meant to draw foot traffic to the square, KNIA-KRLS reported earlier this month.
Knoxville serves as the county seat of Marion County and sits roughly 35 miles southeast of Des Moines, according to municipal geographic records. The city counted 7,595 residents in the 2020 Census, up from 7,313 in 2010. That steady residential base is supplemented by seasonal visitors drawn to the Knoxville Raceway, nationally known as the Sprint Car Capital of the World and home to the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame & Museum, which brings racing tourists through the Marion County Fairgrounds throughout the year.
For now, Mei's Kitchen joins that mix of longtime local favorites and newly renovated spots anchoring downtown Knoxville's commercial core, giving residents and visitors alike another option for a sit-down Chinese meal steps from the town square.
