A 31-year-old motorcyclist from Metuchen is in critical but stable condition after being ejected more than 35 feet during a Labor Day crash outside Menlo Park Mall in Edison. The rider suffered severe head trauma when a 2023 Honda CBR motorcycle collided with a 2023 Kia Sportage at the intersection of Parsonage Road and Menlo Park Mall Drive.
According to News 12 New Jersey, police said the motorcycle was traveling southbound on Parsonage Road while the Kia Sportage, driven by a 43-year-old woman from Scotch Plains, was heading northbound and attempting a left turn into the Menlo Park Mall complex on a yellow light. The Honda struck the front of the Kia, throwing the motorcycle operator from the bike. The Kia driver was not injured in the collision, per the same report.
The motorcyclist was rushed to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he remains in critical but stable condition, the outlet reported. The Edison Police Serious Crash Investigation Team is conducting an active investigation into the crash, which occurred Monday.
Why the Left-Turn Maneuver Matters
The crash centers on a familiar and legally significant intersection dynamic. Under New Jersey statute N.J.S.A. 39:4-90, drivers turning left must yield the right-of-way to oncoming vehicles close enough to constitute an immediate hazard, according to the Pearce Law Firm. The statute addresses the duty to yield when turning left.
At the same time, a separate statute governs how drivers are meant to handle a yellow signal. N.J.S.A. 39:4-105 requires drivers to stop before entering an intersection on yellow unless they are too close to safely brake, as outlined by the Shugar Law Office, which notes that 50 feet is generally considered a safe stopping distance at 20 mph. Those two statutes leave open questions for investigators about the speed and timing of both vehicles as they approached the intersection, since the dossier does not indicate that fault has been formally determined.
A Trauma Center Built for Cases Like This
Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick is one of only three state-designated Level I Trauma Centers in New Jersey, according to RWJBarnabas Health. The hospital's trauma center treats nearly 2,500 acute trauma patients annually, which explains why the critically injured rider was transported there following his head injuries.
A Corridor With a Troubled Crash History
The stretch of roadway around Menlo Park Mall has seen serious collisions before. In November 2024, a driver ran a red light at Route 1 North and Parsonage Road just outside the mall, critically injuring two members of a Middlesex County family; that driver was later charged with driving under the influence and three counts of assault by auto, per New Jersey 101.5.
Motorcyclists in particular have been vulnerable along nearby Route 1. In July 2024, a 45-year-old motorcyclist was killed and another rider injured when bikes traveling in a group collided and struck an SUV near Old Post Road in Edison, a crash detailed by RLS Media, which also noted that a 41-year-old motorcyclist died in Edison in May 2022. Separately, the same Parsonage Road corridor drew attention when an emergency ambulance carrying a 1-year-old patient struck a low-clearance railroad bridge underpass, according to Firefighter Close Calls. That underpass has an 8-foot-6-inch height clearance limit.
Motorcyclists Face Outsized Risk Statewide
Motorcyclists face elevated risks in collisions, a stark reminder of how exposed riders are in crashes like this one. Without the protective enclosure of a car, motorcyclists remain especially susceptible to severe head trauma and ejection on impact.
Even so, the state has seen encouraging movement on motorcycle safety overall. Motorcycle fatalities in New Jersey dropped by approximately 40% in 2025, falling to 72 deaths from a historic peak of 120 rider fatalities in 2024, according to statistics reported by WRNJ Radio. Statewide, fatal crashes overall fell 16%, from 647 in 2024 to 547 in 2025, per data from the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General.
The statewide fatality figures provide context, but the Edison crash outside Menlo Park Mall remains under investigation as authorities work to determine exactly what happened at the intersection.
