A 37-year-old man last seen walking away from his rural Middletown home more than a week ago has still not been located, and New York State Police say he is believed to be a danger to himself. Nicholas P. Francois left his residence at 773 Pocatello Rd. on foot sometime between 5 and 9 p.m. on Aug. 31, and was not reported missing until Sunday, nearly a week later.
State Police Troop F announced the missing-person case publicly on Tuesday, as reported by DailyVoice.com. Troop F is headquartered in Liberty and serves various counties. Francois is described as roughly 5-foot-7 and 280 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes, and has a distinctive vertical tattoo on his right leg reading “Kenneth.”
Investigators say he was last seen wearing a cut-off white shirt, black basketball shorts, a tan hat, and black sneakers with an orange stripe. Police have not said whether the nearly week-long gap between his disappearance and the missing person report has complicated the search. A Rural Corridor Outside Downtown Middletown
Pocatello Road is in Wallkill, and the area is served locally by the Pocatello Fire District, according to the Town of Wallkill. The area is about 10 minutes from Middletown, where police say Francois was known to spend time.
State police said Francois had previously frequented Nelson's and the Switch Inn, two establishments in the City of Middletown. The Switch Inn, at 126 East Main Street, dates back to 1874 as a former Erie Railroad station hotel and is considered the oldest operating bar and restaurant in Orange County, per the Orange County Chamber of Commerce. Nelson's Bar sits nearby at 44-46 Roberts Street, within Middletown's Downtown Business Improvement District, according to Orange County Tourism.
What Tools Investigators Have on Hand
It remains unclear whether search teams have conducted specialized ground searches along Pocatello Road or reviewed surveillance footage near the downtown bars Francois is known to have visited. Middletown Police operate Flock license-plate readers, tools used in investigations.
Cases involving adults believed to be at risk of harm can also involve a Missing Vulnerable Adult Alert in New York, as described by FindLaw. The investigation can also draw on other missing-person resources.
Regional Searches Have Ended in Tragedy Before
Multi-agency searches for missing adults can involve state troopers, sheriff's deputies, and environmental conservation officers, particularly in wooded or rural terrain. That was the case in nearby Montgomery in August, when a joint search effort was launched for a missing 40-year-old man — a search that Hoodline previously reported ended with the man found dead in the woods. New York also has missing-person services for children, college students, and vulnerable adults, and coordination among multiple agencies can help resolve cases, as reported by Newsweek.
