A man was shot in the leg during a drive-by shooting on McDonald Drive near NE 16th Street in Midwest City at about 8:07 p.m., and police say the investigation has hit a wall: the victim himself won't talk. Officers who responded to the scene found the man with a gunshot wound to the leg and got him to a hospital for treatment, but there is no suspect and no vehicle to chase down yet.
According to koco.com, the victim was transported to a hospital, where he was being treated for his injuries. The outlet reported there was no suspect or vehicle information available as investigators worked the case. Police were looking for other witnesses and other possible victims following the shooting, the station noted, suggesting officers are not convinced the gunfire was contained to a single person.
That search for more witnesses has proven difficult. The victim and others in the area were not cooperating with the investigation, according to the Midwest City Police Department, as relayed by the same koco.com report. It's a frustrating dead end for investigators trying to piece together who opened fire and why, on a case that News 9 described as a developing story out of Midwest City, Oklahoma.
Police Still Canvassing for Clues
Per News 9's reporting, authorities are canvassing the area for additional victims and witnesses even as the immediate leads dry up. Investigators currently lack any information about a suspect or a description of the vehicle involved, leaving the case largely open. That gap in vehicle details stands in contrast to reports of Midwest City shootings in 2020 and 2021 that mentioned a dark vehicle or a dark gray Dodge Challenger — but no such lead has surfaced in this incident.
Anyone with information on the shooting should call police at 405-739-1277, the same report states. News 9 added that callers should ask to speak with a supervisor or an officer at the scene when they call in tips.
A Pattern of Drive-By Shootings in Midwest City
This is far from the only drive-by shooting reported in Midwest City. A 2020 report described a separate incident near NE 10th Street between Douglas and Christine that left two people shot — one in the leg — and a third person hit by shrapnel, according to a different report from koco.com. In that case, police said they were looking for a dark vehicle that left the scene, a detail investigators have not been able to establish in the McDonald Drive shooting.
Other Midwest City shootings described in local coverage include a case reported in 2021 in which a man and a horse were both shot, with the man hit in the calf and the horse struck twice, according to okcfox.com. In a 2022 report, kfor.com reported gunfire that damaged doors and windows at an apartment complex near Southeast 29th Street and Air Depot without injuring anyone, while a separate KFOR report said one Midwest City drive-by shooting victim died from a gunshot wound to the head. A third case tracked by the station involved a person shot in the arm near NE 10th and N Air Depot Boulevard, with injuries described as non-life-threatening and a suspect who fled the scene. None of those incidents has been confirmed as connected to the McDonald Drive shooting.
For now, the leg-wound case remains an open investigation with no suspect identified and no vehicle to search for. Police are relying on the public — and hoping for more cooperation than they've gotten so far — to help fill in the blanks.
