Morgan's Ice Cream, the scoop shop that helped anchor Fort Worth's revamped South Main Village, is shutting down after six years in business. The closure comes as South Main Street has increasingly become a nightlife destination, a shift the Fort Worth Star-Telegram described as less favorable for a family-minded daytime ice cream shop.
South Main’s shift is unfolding alongside a broader residential buildout. Over the past decade, 1,655 residential units were built in South Main Village, with another 700 planned. The city describes the village as close to Fort Worth’s Medical District, Trinity Railway Express and commercial and entertainment centers, a mix of destinations it says supports activity both day and night.
Owners Jeff and Stephanie Brannon announced the closure in a social media post, writing, “GOD ... put us on a new path and we follow where He leads! ... Gods way is better, ALWAYS”.
The Brannons got into the ice cream business in December 2020, taking over the South Main Village space from a previous tenant that had closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, per the Star-Telegram. Before that, the couple had previously owned Dwell Coffee & Biscuits in Burleson and Fort Worth, the paper notes. Over six years, the shop developed a following among area residents working from home and among hospital workers and visitors nearby, according to the Star-Telegram's reporting.
The nightlife trend has a measurable economic footprint: Near Southside alcohol sales increased 90% from 2020 to 2024, while more than a dozen new establishments opened in the district after 2020. The sales figure tracks alcohol-serving businesses, not all neighborhood commerce, but it helps explain how the area’s evening economy has expanded during Morgan’s tenure.
A Shifting Neighborhood and a Timeline in Question
Morgan's built its identity around a small-batch approach, offering seven anchor flavors plus four rotating flavors each month, including staples like Strawberry Magic and Cookie Monster, along with a variety of non-dairy options, per CultureMap's report. The Near Southside's ice cream market grew more competitive in recent years, with the Star-Telegram pointing to the arrival of Portland-based Salt & Straw as a challenge to local melt shops, alongside longtime southside paleterias Alma's and Rico's.
Morgan’s closure comes as South Main continues to attract new businesses as well as retain established neighborhood spots. A 2026 look at the street’s changing storefronts noted that a new group of entrepreneurs had opened businesses along South Main over the prior year, while longtime operators described the area’s small-business community as closely connected. That growth offers a wider picture of the district than nightlife alone.
The Star-Telegram reported that Morgan's would close as soon as September 29 and remain open to walk-in customers only through that date.
The Burleson Spinoff
The Brannons expanded once, opening a second Morgan's location in Burleson in 2022, but that outpost has since closed, with the Star-Telegram reporting the Burleson shutdown came in 2025.
