Detroit starts today clear and near 72 degrees, but the calm opening is setting up a muggy, stormy day across the city and metro region. Temperatures will climb to about 89 degrees, with heat index values reaching the 90s before showers and thunderstorms become more likely during the afternoon and evening.
A brief quieter stretch is possible late this morning and early afternoon, but storm chances rise around 2 p.m. and continue into the evening. West winds will stay light at 3 to 7 mph, while the air remains humid enough to make the heat feel more oppressive than the thermometer suggests.
The latest outlook is a substantive update from Wednesday's Detroit forecast, with a slightly lower high but a more clearly defined threat from repeated thunderstorms. The National Weather Service Detroit/Pontiac says some storms could become severe, and no watches, warnings or advisories are currently posted.
Afternoon Storms Could Bring Wind And Water
Damaging wind gusts are expected to be the main concern if stronger storms develop, with isolated hail also possible. Downpours could arrive quickly, making outdoor plans and afternoon travel more complicated, especially where storms repeatedly cross the same areas.
Storms are likely tonight, particularly before 9 p.m., with additional rounds possible overnight. The low will be near 70 degrees and the overall rain chance is about 70%; typical rainfall could range from a quarter-inch to half an inch, while stronger storms may produce 1 to 2 inches in a short time and trigger localized flooding.
Friday Stays Wet Before The Weekend Calms Down
Friday brings another likely round of showers and thunderstorms under mostly cloudy skies, with a high near 82 and a 70% chance of precipitation. Friday night stays unsettled with a low around 65 and a smaller storm chance.
Saturday could begin with a few rain showers before 8 a.m., then turn mostly sunny with a high near 78. Sunday looks much quieter and sunny near 78, followed by a mostly sunny Labor Day near 80 degrees.
The calmer pattern continues into Tuesday, when temperatures reach about 81 under partly sunny skies. Wednesday warms back to around 86, with another chance of showers and thunderstorms showing up in the outlook.
