A serious motorcycle crash shut down part of East Williams Street in south Apex early Tuesday, with police diverting traffic around the intersection of East Williams Street and Technology Drive while crews worked the scene. Officers responded to the crash, which involved injuries, at around 4 a.m., and the closure left commuters scrambling for alternate routes during the morning rush.
According to WRAL, Apex police said crews responded to the crash with injuries at around 4 a.m. Tuesday, and the intersection was closed as a result. Police told the outlet they were diverting traffic around the area and asked motorists to avoid the intersection and use an alternate route until further notice. WRAL's Breaking News Tracker arrived at the scene around 4:45 a.m. and saw a motorcycle in the road near scattered debris, with several police officers on hand.
CBS 17 reported that the Apex Police Department confirmed the intersection was closed due to the crash and said the department would share an update once the road reopens. As of early Tuesday morning, police had provided no further information beyond the closure itself. In a statement carried by that outlet, Apex police said, “Thank you for your patience and cooperation; please drive safely.”
What Investigators Still Don't Know
The cause of the crash and the extent of the rider's injuries had not been determined as of Tuesday morning, per the same WRAL account. Neither Apex police statement addressed how the collision occurred or whether another vehicle was involved, leaving those details unresolved for now.
The intersection sits along a stretch of East Williams Street that has drawn attention from local planners well beyond this single crash. Apex's own government notes that a proposed NCDOT project would convert the nearby NC 55 intersection with Technology Drive and East Williams Street into a reduced conflict intersection, restrict access along parts of East Williams Street, widen NC 55 toward Sunset Lake Road, and add pedestrian facilities.
A Corridor With A Recent History Of Serious Crashes
Tuesday's crash is not the first serious incident to hit East Williams Street this year. An electric-bike rider suffered significant injuries after colliding with a vehicle on the same street, with Apex Police and Apex Fire both responding to that scene, Hoodline previously reported in its piece on the Apex e-bike crash. It remains unverified whether that earlier e-bike collision and Tuesday's motorcycle crash describe the same incident.
Other recent cases have added to concerns about crashes involving powered two-wheelers in Apex. In July, police investigated a hit-and-run at Apex Peakway and Branch Line Lane involving a teenager riding an e-bike, and in October 2025 the department issued a public alert after a crash involving a youth named Colton revealed that what was initially reported as an e-bike was actually an electric motorcycle requiring a license, registration, and insurance, the earlier report noted.
Those local incidents track with a broader national trend. Estimated nationwide emergency-room visits for e-bike injuries climbed to 102,777 in 2025, a 71 percent single-year increase, while visits among children age 14 and younger jumped from 6,444 in 2024 to 17,206 in 2025, according to the same reporting.
For now, the immediate concern in Apex is Tuesday's closure itself.
