A motorcycle and an SUV collided on Bedford Street in Lakeville Monday night, seriously injuring both drivers and forcing a full closure of Route 18 in both directions. The crash happened around 6:24 p.m. when a Yamaha motorcycle struck a Honda CR-V, according to Lakeville Police.
The man operating the motorcycle and the woman driving the CR-V were the only people in their respective vehicles, and both suffered serious injuries, Lakeville Police said, according to Boston 25 News. Both were transported by Lakeville Fire Department ambulances to Morton Hospital in Taunton, according to a statement released by John Guilfoil Public Relations on behalf of Lakeville Police Chief Matthew Perkins.
The Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, known as C.A.R.S., is investigating the crash alongside Lakeville Police. The specialized unit handles 3D laser scanning, drone aerial mapping, and forensic reconstruction for serious and fatal crashes statewide, responding to between 500 and 600 requests for service each year.
Mutual Aid Response Shut Down the Highway
The crash prompted a mutual aid response from surrounding agencies. Emergency responders from the Middleborough Police Department and units from the Plymouth County Sheriff's Office assisted at the scene along Bedford Street, per a report from 1420 WBSM. The regional coordination reflects the scale of the closure, which cut off Route 18 in both directions while crews worked the scene.
A Familiar Hazard Along Bedford Street
This is not the first time this stretch of Route 18 has been the site of a serious motorcycle crash. Almost exactly a year earlier, on September 5, 2025, a motorcyclist was seriously hurt in a crash at Taunton Street and taken to St. Luke's Hospital, the Fall River Reporter reported at the time.
The roadway's history stretches back further still. In May 2024, a 32-year-old Taunton man died after his Honda CBR1000 motorcycle collided with a pickup truck at the intersection of Bedford Street and Rhode Island Road, according to the same outlet's report. And in October 2023, another fatal motorcycle crash occurred on Bedford Street near Betty's Neck Road, resulting in the death of an adult male rider following ambulance transport, per the Fall River Reporter's coverage at that time.
A Statewide Rise in Motorcycle Fatalities
The Lakeville crash also lands amid a broader statewide trend. State crash data from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation's IMPACT portal recorded 62 fatal motorcycle crashes across Massachusetts in 2025, according to WWLP-22News.
That followed a sharp increase the year before: Massachusetts recorded 71 motorcycle operator fatalities in 2024, a 22 percent jump from 58 fatalities in 2023, prompting the state Registry of Motor Vehicles to launch public safety awareness campaigns, according to figures published by the state at Mass.gov. A traffic-safety source lists Route 18 among Plymouth County's high-risk roads and discusses crash patterns generally, according to Shea Culgin Law.
Lakeville Police have not yet released the identities of the motorcyclist or the CR-V driver, and the cause of Monday's crash remains under investigation by both local police and state reconstruction specialists.
