A serious crash involving a motorcycle and a vehicle shut down northbound Interstate 35 at Antioch Road in Overland Park, Kansas, leaving the motorcyclist in critical condition. Northbound I-35 has since reopened. Police had diverted traffic onto Antioch Road while crews worked the scene.
Northbound Lanes Closed, All Traffic Rerouted
According to KMBC, Overland Park police said they diverted traffic onto Antioch Road while the northbound lanes were closed at the interchange. Details on what led to the collision, including the age and helmet status of the injured motorcyclist, have not been released.
The detour uses Antioch Road, which runs near I-435 and toward Merriam, according to a City of Merriam existing conditions report.
A Recent Crash Near Antioch Road
In June, a crash on northbound I-35 just south of Antioch Road injured two people and created a mile-long backup.
The broader interchange area has also seen a deadly crash this year. On August 31, a 43-year-old Kansas City, Kansas man died on northbound I-35 in nearby Olathe when his vehicle left the roadway, struck a bridge pillar, and caught fire, shutting down all northbound lanes for hours, as Hoodline previously reported.
The Physical Risks Facing Motorcyclists
Motorcycle crashes carry outsized danger compared to other vehicle collisions. Motorcyclists are roughly 28 times more likely than passenger car occupants to die in a crash per mile traveled, based on 2023 data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
It remains unknown whether the motorcyclist involved in the Antioch Road crash was wearing a helmet.
