A motorcyclist died Wednesday evening after a crossover SUV turned in front of him on Watt Avenue near Arden Way in Arden-Arcade, and its driver drove off, according to the California Highway Patrol. The rider, believed to be a man in his 30s, was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The motorcyclist had been headed south on Watt Avenue near Arden Way when the SUV turned directly in front of him, causing the motorcycle to go down, CHP told FOX40. The SUV driver drove off. His identity has not been released.
Under California law, leaving the scene of a crash that causes death or serious permanent injury may be punished by two, three, or four years in state prison or up to a year in county jail; a fine of $1,000 to $10,000 may be imposed instead of or in addition to imprisonment, according to FindLaw. Drivers are required to stay at the scene and help regardless of fault, and separately, the California Vehicle Code mandates that anyone involved in a crash resulting in injury or death file a written report with police within 24 hours, per the Law Offices of J.G. Winter.
A Corridor With a Troubled Recent History
This is not the first deadly crash at this stretch of road. In April, a pickup truck struck and killed a male pedestrian at the same intersection of Watt Avenue and Arden Way at 4:52 a.m., according to the Farahi Law Firm.
Because Arden-Arcade is unincorporated, CHP's North Sacramento office is the lead agency for traffic-collision investigations along Watt Avenue, as previously reported by Hoodline. Watt Avenue has drawn scrutiny as a dangerous corridor, with advocates calling for physical barriers.
Traffic Safety in Sacramento County
The broader numbers underscore why safety advocates keep pointing to this stretch of Sacramento County. The county ranked first among 15 large California county jurisdictions for speed-related fatal and injury collisions in 2023, logging 745 speed-involved crashes, per the California Office of Traffic Safety.
CHP has not announced any arrests or identified the SUV involved in Wednesday's crash.
