A 60-year-old man identified by his wife as Thomas was shot and killed outside his home on Grandhaven Drive near Old NC Highway 27 late Monday night after stepping out to grab groceries for a Labor Day cookout. Gaston County Police officers responding to a reported shooting found him suffering from a gunshot wound, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers have since arrested 25-year-old Jaelan Drum on a charge of second-degree murder, and he is being held without bond at the Gaston County Jail.
According to WCCB Charlotte, Gaston County Police identified Drum, whose full legal name is listed in county booking records as Jaelen Michael Lee Drum, as the suspect in the homicide investigation, which remains ongoing. Investigators have not released additional information about the victim beyond what his family has shared, and no further details on Drum's arrest have been made public. A neighbor told WSOC-TV that the confrontation was set off by a minor fender bender in front of the victim's house.
The victim's wife told the same station that she and her husband had been married 24 years, and that he had only left home briefly to pick up food for a holiday cookout before he was shot at close range just outside their door. She described the shooting as a sudden, senseless end to what should have been an ordinary errand on a holiday weekend.
A Second Fatal Shooting Minutes Later
The Grandhaven Drive shooting was not the only deadly incident Gaston County first responders handled that night. Per the station's report, Gaston Emergency Medical Services responded to two fatal shootings within minutes of each other in Mount Holly, with the Grandhaven Drive killing followed closely by a second fatal shooting on Noels Drive. Law enforcement was working to determine whether the two incidents were connected, though no link had been confirmed as of the reports.
Because the shooting happened in an unincorporated pocket outside Mount Holly's city limits, Gaston County Police rather than Mount Holly's municipal department led the investigation. County records show the Gaston County Police Department was created by legislative act in July 1957 specifically to handle law enforcement in unincorporated areas of the county, which is why county investigators, not city police, are running point on the Grandhaven Drive case.
What Drum Could Face Under State Law
Under North Carolina General Statute 14-17(b), second-degree murder is defined as an unlawful killing committed with malice but without premeditation or deliberation. It is classified as a Class B1 felony, carrying a presumptive minimum sentence of 192 months, or 16 years, up to life without parole. It remains an open question whether prosecutors will pursue that full sentencing range against Drum, and court records have not yet confirmed whether he and the victim knew each other beforehand.
A Familiar Pattern of Argument-Driven Violence
The circumstances described by neighbors fit a broader pattern tracked by state officials. A report released in April 2025 by the North Carolina Department of Public Safety found that 39% of all homicide deaths in Gaston County between 2013 and 2022 were precipitated by an argument or conflict, and 72% involved a firearm. A roadside dispute escalating into gunfire lines up with that trend, even as investigators continue piecing together exactly what happened outside the victim's home.
Gaston County has seen other major homicide investigations in recent years.
