Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport has once again claimed the top spot among North America's busiest airports for customer satisfaction, according to J.D. Power's annual rankings. The airport scored 660 points in the 2025 North America Airport Satisfaction Study, edging out Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport for the mega airport crown.
J.D. Power's 2025 results place MSP in first place among mega airports, with Detroit landing second at 649 points and Phoenix third at 634 points, according to The Points Guy. The rankings, part of a broader trend WJON also reported on, are based on surveys of 30,439 U.S. and Canadian travelers who passed through a North American airport between July 2024 and July 2025. J.D. Power defines mega airports as those handling at least 33 million passengers annually.
MSP's own website touts the honor directly, stating on its homepage that the airport “was ranked best in customer satisfaction for mega airports by J.D. Power,” per MSP Airport. The airport had already claimed the No. 1 mega airport ranking in 2024, when it scored 671 points and swept the highest customer-satisfaction marks in every one of the seven dimensions J.D. Power measures, according to the Metropolitan Airports Commission.
What J.D. Power Actually Measures
The study evaluates seven factors: ease of travel through the airport, trust, terminal facilities, airport staff, the departure experience, food and retail, and the arrival or travel-to-airport experience, the same source notes. Nationally, overall satisfaction with mega airports rose 8 points from the prior year, while satisfaction with food, beverage and retail options climbed 14 points. The 2024 study behind MSP's first-place finish was built on 26,000 customer surveys from travelers who had used at least one U.S. or Canadian airport.
MSP's passenger numbers help explain why it lands in the mega airport tier at all. The airport served a total of 34.7 million passengers in 2023, and traffic in 2024 ran more than 8% above the prior year's pace year-to-date, per the Metropolitan Airports Commission's account.
Terminal Upgrades Already Underway
The satisfaction wins have come alongside a major construction push at the airport. The Metropolitan Airports Commission and Delta launched a $242 million Terminal 1 modernization program in 2023, with completion originally planned for late 2025, according to the commission. A separate Terminal 2 North Expansion project, which will add two airline gates, is scheduled to open in early 2027, the same source states.
Beyond J.D. Power, MSP has picked up recognition elsewhere in recent years. The airport was named the best airport in North America by the ASQ Awards in 2024 and ranked first among U.S. airports in Travel + Leisure's World's Best Awards that same year, according to travellerscoop.com. For Minnesota travelers, the back-to-back top finishes suggest the ongoing terminal investments are landing well with passengers even as construction continues. With Detroit and Phoenix close behind in the 2025 standings, the competition among the continent's busiest hubs for customer loyalty shows no signs of easing.
