A 54-year-old driver was arrested Tuesday night after crashing a Ford Mustang into a masonry building near Greenback Lane and Main Avenue in Orangevale and then trying to run away, officials said. The crash happened around 9:40 p.m. and left the driver with minor injuries, while the building sustained structural damage.
California Highway Patrol East Sacramento officers caught up with the driver around 10 p.m., roughly twenty minutes after he fled the scene, according to CBS Sacramento. The station reports that the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District attributed the structural damage to the building directly to the crash impact.
The Sacramento County Building Department was expected to evaluate the masonry structure for damage, per the same account. It remains unclear which business or tenant occupies the building, and the county's findings on whether the structure remains safe have not yet been released.
A Corridor With a Troubled Record
Greenback Lane and Main Avenue is not an unfamiliar intersection to Orangevale emergency crews. In February 2026, a pedestrian crossing outside a marked crosswalk near the same intersection was struck and killed by two vehicles, according to the Folsom Times. Just months later, a major-injury, multi-vehicle collision shut down westbound lanes of Greenback Lane near Walnut Avenue during Caltrans roadway work on May 23, 2026, as documented by CHP logs cited by the Johnson Attorneys Group.
The corridor carries an enormous volume of daily traffic. City of Citrus Heights and Sacramento County traffic-count data show 45,737 vehicles westbound on one Greenback Lane segment and 47,579 eastbound on another, according to the Citrus Heights Sentinel. The road links Citrus Heights, Orangevale, and Folsom.
Who Polices an Unincorporated Community
CHP's East Sacramento office was identified in connection with the Orangevale crash. Under California Vehicle Code Section 20002, fleeing the scene of a crash that causes property damage without providing identifying information is a misdemeanor carrying up to six months in county jail and fines as high as $1,000, according to Cefali & Cefali.
It is not yet known whether any county notice has been issued for the Greenback Lane property.
Part of an Intense Stretch for Orangevale
The Mustang crash landed in the middle of an unusually severe run of traffic emergencies in Orangevale. The previous night, a driver was killed when their vehicle overturned and burst into flames on the Hazel Avenue bridge, an incident that also injured two CHP officers attempting a rescue, as Hoodline reported.
Earlier in the year, the area also saw other emergency responses. Together, the incidents underscore a roadway network in unincorporated Sacramento County that has drawn repeated emergency response throughout 2026.
