A routine traffic stop at the Campo Border Patrol Checkpoint on Interstate 8 turned into a major narcotics bust after agents pulled nearly 200 pounds of methamphetamine from a westbound vehicle. The drugs, wrapped in 35 individual foil packages, carried an estimated street value of $436,300.
The seizure was reported by fox5sandiego.com, which detailed how the stop at the I-8 checkpoint resulted in the discovery of the drugs. Agents found the meth, totaling 198.33 pounds, in the vehicle as it traveled west, according to the station's report.
A Border Patrol K-9 unit played a key role in cracking the case. Per a Customs and Border Protection post on LinkedIn, the dog gave a positive alert that led agents to the 198.33 pounds of methamphetamine in the vehicle.
Driver Turned Over to Federal Agents
Once the packages were confirmed as narcotics, the driver and the drugs were handed off to the Drug Enforcement Administration for federal prosecution, the same account notes. Border Patrol also seized the truck used to haul the shipment.
