The move comes as Nebraska's home stadium in Lincoln undergoes a massive renovation that will temporarily slash its capacity, pushing the Huskers to find a bigger stage to make up for lost tickets.
The game was originally slated for September 11, 2027, at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, according to KMBC. A change to the college football calendar made the earlier date possible: the Football Bowl Subdivision Oversight Committee adjusted the playing calendar to let schools begin one week earlier, the station reports. That regulatory shift, adopted in 2026, standardized a 14-week regular season starting on the Thursday of what was previously designated Week 0, according to the NCAA.
The scheduling shuffle traces back to Nebraska's $600 million Memorial Stadium overhaul, dubbed the “Big Red Rebuild,” which the University of Nebraska Board of Regents approved in April 2026. Per Nebraska Public Media, the project will temporarily cut the stadium's capacity from more than 85,000 to roughly 65,000 during the 2027 season while construction is underway. That squeeze on seating — and the ticket revenue that comes with it — appears to be the driving force behind sending a non-conference home game to a bigger neutral-site venue instead.
Why Arrowhead Makes Business Sense
Moving the opener to the 76,416-seat Arrowhead Stadium lets Nebraska offset lost ticket revenue while still preserving seven home games in Lincoln for its local fan base, according to the seed reporting cited in the dossier. The 2027 season opener will not be included in Nebraska's standard seven-game season ticket package, meaning ticket sales for the Arrowhead matchup will be handled separately from Husker season passes, per Sports Illustrated. Nebraska season ticket holders already face a re-seating process for 2027 because of the stadium construction, the outlet notes.
Following the Arrowhead opener, Nebraska will complete its non-conference schedule with home games in Lincoln against Northern Illinois on September 4 and Northern Iowa on September 18, the same Sports Illustrated report states. A Big Ten conference matchup is also on tap for September 11. For Nebraska fans used to Memorial Stadium's sellout streak — the Huskers have sold out every home game since 1962, hitting their 400th consecutive sellout during the 2024 season, according to StadiumDB — the road trip to Kansas City represents a rare break from tradition.

For Miami University, the game marks the RedHawks' Kansas City debut. Arrowhead Events announced that the Cornhuskers and RedHawks will meet at Arrowhead for the first time, and the two schools have also agreed to a return matchup, scheduled for September 6, 2031, at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, according to Sports Illustrated.
There's also a coaching thread connecting the two programs. Husker defensive line coach Corey Brown spent three seasons coaching the defensive line at Miami (Ohio) before joining Nebraska's staff in winter 2026, according to Huskers.com, with his units helping the RedHawks rank among the MAC's top defensive fronts. Brown joined Nebraska under new defensive coordinator Rob Aurich.
Nebraska isn't unfamiliar with Arrowhead.
