A pedestrian is in critical condition after being struck in an auto-pedestrian crash near Nellis Avenue and Patterson Avenue, close to the busy Nellis and Sahara intersection in East Las Vegas, early Sunday morning. Las Vegas police shut down both northbound and southbound lanes of Nellis Avenue following the crash, which happened around 4:28 a.m., while eastbound and westbound lanes on Sahara Avenue stayed open.
What Police Have Said So Far
According to KSNV, the pedestrian was transported to an area hospital and remains in critical condition. Police reported that no impairment is suspected in the crash, though the investigation into the circumstances remains ongoing. The station's report notes that lanes on Nellis Avenue were shut down in both directions as officers worked the scene.
This is at least the third serious or fatal pedestrian crash along the Nellis Boulevard corridor since August. On September 14, a 44-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run while crossing North Nellis Boulevard near Stewart Avenue outside a marked crosswalk, a case Hoodline covered in September. Just weeks earlier, on August 24, a woman died at Sunrise Hospital after a hit-and-run at South Nellis Boulevard and East Twain Avenue, a crash that marked the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's 80th traffic fatality of 2026, according to an LVMPD press release.
A Corridor With a Troubled History
The stretch of Nellis near Sahara Avenue has seen fatal pedestrian crashes before. In November 2025, a pedestrian was struck and killed by a Chevrolet Avalanche while attempting to cross South Nellis Boulevard just south of East Sahara Avenue outside a designated crosswalk, according to a separate LVMPD announcement from that time. That same month, family members of 35-year-old Jon Silk publicly called for traffic safety upgrades along Nellis Boulevard after Silk was struck and killed by a truck while crossing the arterial road outside a crosswalk, as reported by KSNV.
Pedestrian safety on corridors like Nellis can be affected by roadway design. High-visibility crosswalk markings have been followed by increased driver yielding after some crosswalks were converted.
What Nevada Law Requires
Nevada Revised Statute 484B.283 requires drivers to yield the right-of-way by slowing or stopping for pedestrians crossing within marked or unmarked crosswalks at intersections without functioning traffic signals, according to Justia Law. At the same time, NRS 484B.287 specifies that pedestrians crossing outside a marked or unmarked crosswalk must yield to vehicles, with mid-block jaywalking carrying a civil infraction fine of up to $100.
Despite the persistent danger on corridors like Nellis, preliminary statewide numbers suggest broader improvement. The Nevada Office of Traffic Safety reported that 230 people died in traffic-related crashes statewide between January 1 and August 31, 2026, an 11.88% reduction from the 261 deaths recorded during the same period in 2025. Clark County alone recorded 92 traffic fatalities in the first half of 2026, a 32.85% decline from the 137 deaths tallied in the first six months of 2025, according to the Las Vegas Sun.
Police said the pedestrian was crossing Nellis outside a marked crosswalk, and no additional details about the pedestrian's identity or condition have been released. The investigation into the crash near Nellis and Patterson avenues remains active.
