A New Jersey nonprofit that has served adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities since 1980 has a new home base. Our House Inc. announced Sept. 14 the opening of its new Spring Street building in New Providence, a 26,000-square-foot accessible facility built to bring the organization's programs, staff and support services together under one roof.
The move consolidates what had been scattered operations into a single accessible location, according to ROI-NJ, which reported that the new site brings together expanded program spaces, administrative offices and all other necessary resources under one roof. The building includes expanded learning and activity spaces, training kitchens, sensory rooms and on-site nursing support, features the organization says are designed to support learning, independence, personal growth and practical life skills for the people it serves.
The Spring Street facility itself has a longer paper trail than the Sept. 14 announcement suggests. Our House leased approximately 26,000 square feet of space at 41 Spring St. in New Providence, part of a much larger 171,216-square-foot single-story building, according to NJ.com, which reported the lease back in April. Around that same period, the nonprofit's contractor, Unity Construction, indicated Our House expected to move into the new location during summer 2026.
A Building With Its Own History
The property has changed hands and evolved over the years. Shelbourne Global Solutions purchased the Spring Street Innovation Center from Mountain Development Corp. for $23 million in 2018, according to NJBIZ, which noted the building had recently received $3.5 million in upgrades at the time of that sale. The site sits two miles from Interstate 78 with access to I-287, per the same outlet, putting it within easy reach of the counties Our House serves.
ENV Architecture + Design and Unity Construction Services transformed the building into Our House's new home base, the nonprofit said in its announcement covered by ROI-NJ. Founded in 1980, Our House describes the New Providence headquarters as marking a new chapter in the organization's 46th year of commitment to creating greater opportunities, independence and community inclusion for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Programs Moving Into the New Space
The Spring Street facility will be home to several of Our House's day programs, including Hope Autism Solutions, the Volunteer Action Program and a new initiative called SkillsUp. Hope Autism Solutions provides adults with autism spectrum disorder a full-day life enhancement program built around personal growth, learning, empowerment and self-esteem, according to the ROI-NJ report. The Volunteer Action Program, by contrast, serves more independent individuals who volunteer their time five days a week, year-round, at local nonprofit organizations.
The newest addition, the SkillsUp Pre-Vocational Training Program, is described as a dedicated two-year program set to begin in 2027, offering hands-on training meant to prepare individuals to enter the workforce. It builds on a model the organization already tested: Our House opened its first SkillsUp program in Woodbridge in 2025. The nonprofit's broader employment work includes helping individuals secure paid jobs, unpaid positions and internships, a mission the organization detailed to NJ.com earlier this year.
How Many People Our House Serves
Exactly how many people rely on Our House's services depends on which of the organization's own figures you consult. ROI-NJ reported that Our House serves more than 365 individuals across Essex, Morris, Middlesex, Somerset and Union counties, while the nonprofit's own website states that it supports 370 adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities overall. Our House's website separately notes that its day programs alone reach 215 adults across nine programs, and that the organization supports 74 employees through partnerships with more than 80 companies.
According to that same organizational page, the move to Spring Street specifically houses two of Our House's day programs alongside its administrative offices, consistent with the broader consolidation described in the Sept. 14 announcement. Whatever the precise headcount, the new facility gives Our House a single, accessible base from which to run programs that had previously been spread across multiple sites — and a launching pad for the SkillsUp expansion still to come in 2027.
