A wildfire was reported Sept. 20 near Drivers Flat in Placer County, on federal land. The blaze, dubbed the Drivers Flat Fire by the Foresthill Fire Protection District, was first discovered at 2:18 p.m., according to the National Interagency Fire Center. As of Sept. 20, containment status and cause had not been determined.
The fire broke out near Drivers Flat in Placer County. The Sacramento Bee reported that the fire was on federal land managed by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation.
The primitive Ruck-A-Chucky Campground lies along the Middle Fork American River and is first-come, first-served, according to the state parks department's description of the area.
A Corridor Already Flagged for Fire Risk
The stretch of terrain where the fire ignited is part of a landscape addressed in CAL FIRE's Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit's 2026 strategic wildfire protection plan.
The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation partners with the Bureau of Land Management to reduce wildland-fire risk in Auburn State Recreation Area, according to the Sierra Booster.
A Region Still Shadowed by the Mosquito Fire
The Foresthill area carries hard memory of just how destructive fire can get here. In September 2022, the Mosquito Fire ultimately burned 76,788 acres across Placer and El Dorado counties, becoming California's largest wildfire that year and forcing widespread evacuations across the Foresthill Divide and surrounding river canyons, as Hoodline detailed in its coverage of the nearby Wentworth Fire. That history looms over any new ignition along the Foresthill Divide, even one whose size and cause remain undetermined.
Placer County has leaned into wildfire hardening in the years since. In July, the county was officially named a Fire Risk Reduction Community by the California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection. The designation can help property owners seek fire-insurance discounts. The county has also invested in wildfire mitigation work.
Drivers Flat Fire Reported
The Drivers Flat ignition was reported Sept. 20.
It is not the county's first brush fire of the season, either. On August 8, firefighters stopped the forward progress of the 22-acre Flat Fire near Lowell Hill Road and Dutch Flat Powerhouse Road in a rural, heavily wooded stretch north of Interstate 80, according to CBS News Sacramento. The fire was 5% contained and had prompted temporary evacuation warnings in neighboring Nevada County.
Local fire-prevention efforts have not gone untested this season. In early September, vandals damaged Placer County Chipper Program equipment by cutting gas lines and drilling fuel tanks, temporarily disrupting the county's vegetation-clearing program, which normally charges $80 per hour but offered one free hour of chipping for qualifying requests during a promotion and helps property owners maintain defensible space during peak fire season, as Hoodline reported at the time. As of Sept. 20, containment status and the cause of the Drivers Flat Fire had not been determined.
