A 16-year-old girl reported missing from New Windsor last Thursday evening was found safe two days later in the neighboring Town of Newburgh, capping an intensive search that pulled in local, county, and federal investigators. The Town of New Windsor Police Department confirmed she was reunited with her family, but officials have released almost no details about where exactly she was found or what led to her disappearance in the first place.
According to the Daily Voice, New Windsor police received the missing-person report around 6:28 p.m. on September 24, and officers and detectives spent the following two days chasing multiple leads before the girl turned up safe in Newburgh on September 26. The department has not released the teenager's name, nor has it explained the circumstances of her disappearance or provided specifics on where in Newburgh she was located, the outlet reported.
The New Windsor Police Department provided information on Sunday, September 27, confirming the timeline: the girl was reported missing September 24 and found safe in Newburgh on September 26. That two-day gap between report and recovery is notable given how close the two towns actually sit to one another.
A Creek Marks Much of the Boundary
New Windsor and Newburgh are neighboring municipalities in eastern Orange County. A creek forms most, but not all, of Newburgh’s boundary with New Windsor. Their proximity underscores how closely local police jurisdictions can come together when a search crosses town lines.
The FBI's Hudson Valley Safe Streets Task Force, the City of Beacon Police Department, and the Orange County District Attorney's Office all assisted in the investigation, the Daily Voice reported.
The Investigation Began After the Report
New Windsor officers and detectives began investigating after receiving the missing-person report on September 24.
Other Missing-Person Searches
Earlier this month, New York State Police appealed for help finding 37-year-old Nicholas Francois, who disappeared from his Wallkill home near Middletown under circumstances authorities said made him a danger to himself.
For now, the New Windsor case has a resolution that many searches don't get: the teenager was found safe and reunited with her family. What remains unanswered is exactly how she ended up in Newburgh, and what happened in the two days she was gone — questions authorities have not answered publicly.
