Nick & G’s plans to close in mid-October for renovations and a menu refresh, then reopen in November near its 10th anniversary, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. The planned work covers the dining room, bar and patio, with an Amalfi Coast-inspired design and a more focused coastal Italian-American menu. The Union-Tribune reported that Gianina Pickens is leading the redesign and that Alex Carballo, who has 20 years of experience in San Diego’s hospitality scene, is developing the menu. The restaurant’s planned November return would bring it back around its 10th year in business.
A separate village restaurant makeover
Nick & G’s is not the only village restaurant to undergo a change in ownership and space. In a separate case, the Union-Tribune reported that Jennifer Fields took over the former Rancho Santa Fe Bistro and began reimagining it, with the patio open while indoor work continued. The comparison is limited: it describes a different restaurant and does not establish how often village businesses renovate or what will happen during Nick & G’s closure.
A distinct development proposal
The Gateway Project is another separate change near the village, not part of Nick & G’s private renovation. The Union-Tribune reported that a proposal near the village entrance would replace an existing gas station with 13 age-restricted rental units, a 4,500-square-foot space for a boutique grocer and underground parking for 49 vehicles. A separate Rancho Santa Fe Association board resolution described the Gateway design as Spanish Colonial Revival, in a Lilian Rice style and in keeping with the Village Architectural Design Guidelines. Those records concern Gateway, not Nick & G’s, and do not establish a timeline for the separate development.
