North Las Vegas police are investigating a shooting that happened around 2:03 pm Monday on the 2500 block of Ellis Street near Carey Avenue, according to police. One man died at the scene, and a woman had an apparent gunshot wound. Police had not immediately provided further details about the woman’s condition or the circumstances of the shooting, and the investigation remains active and ongoing.
The shooting was reported by KLAS 8 News Now. KLAS reported that police found a man and a woman with apparent gunshot wounds; the man died, and detectives considered the incident isolated between the two victims. The victims’ identities and a motive had not been disclosed.
A Previous Ellis Street Shooting
In May 2016, a 16-year-old boy was shot Monday night in the adjacent 2400 block of Ellis Street near Carey Avenue and taken to University Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The two incidents occurred on the same street more than a decade apart.
Carey Avenue has also seen law enforcement activity, including an officer-involved shooting near North Commerce Street in June that prompted a heavy police presence and a lockdown of the area, as Hoodline previously reported in Cops Swarm Carey And Commerce.
Potential Legal Exposure If Charges Follow
Should the Monday shooting be found to involve gunfire from a vehicle or structure into a populated area, Nevada Revised Statute 202.287 classifies that conduct as a Category B felony, carrying one to ten years in state prison and fines of up to $5,000, according to Justia Law. No suspects were outstanding.
Violent Crime Numbers Paint A Mixed Picture
Nevada tracks violent crime offenses and clearance rates as part of its crime-data reporting. While homicides in the neighboring Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department jurisdiction dropped 22% from 2024 to 2025, North Las Vegas saw only a minor decrease in total homicides over that same span, the Review-Journal reported in February. More recently, KSNV News 3 Las Vegas reported that homicides within the Metro jurisdiction rose more than 21% year-to-date through late August 2026 compared with the same period a year earlier, a regional spike that has kept pressure on municipal departments across the valley.
North Las Vegas has responded by growing its police force. The department added 34 police officers and two corrections officers in March through its Recruit Class 2025-02 graduation under Chief Jacqueline Gravatt, according to the City of North Las Vegas. That followed a broader hiring push that added 45 officers between 2023 and 2025, pushing the department's total sworn officer count past 380, per market analysis from Nevada Real Estate Group, which contrasted the city's master-planned developments with older residential corridors like Carey Avenue.
A Homicide Near Carey Avenue
In August, Kareamah Bey was killed in a homicide, and she was connected to the Belmont Street and Carey Avenue area.
