CUNY Graduates Already Struggling to Land Local Tech Jobs

The mismatch is landing hardest on graduates of the City University of New York system, the city's primary engine of economic mobility. A separate Center for an Urban Future study examines CUNY's computer science education and workforce pathways, while the organization's research examines challenges that predate the recent generative AI surge.

CUNY's tech pipeline has also grown. Between 2014 and 2024, computer science enrollment at CUNY rose 146 percent, from 4,639 students to 11,431 students, according to the organization's research. The pipeline kept widening at the K-12 level too: enrollment in New York City public school computer science classes quadrupled under the city's Computer Science for All initiative, rising from 5.5 percent of students, or 54,000, in 2016 to 20 percent, or more than 193,000 students, in 2024, according to a Center for an Urban Future analysis reported by Chalkbeat. Educational advocates are now calling for a “CS4All 2.0” curriculum built around AI and computational thinking rather than traditional coding basics.

Entry-Level Squeeze Isn't Just a Tech Problem

The contraction in starter tech roles has drawn attention to broader early-career employment pressures. The strain shows up nationally too: recent college graduates faced an unemployment rate of about 5.7 percent and an underemployment rate of 41.5 percent in the first quarter of 2026, according to Federal Reserve Bank of New York data reported by Hoodline, meaning more than four in ten recent grads nationwide were working jobs that typically don't require a college degree at all.

The pullback isn't unique to New York. Employers are also rethinking how junior hires learn the job in the first place: mortgage-technology firm Valon instituted a policy banning newly hired employees from using generative AI tools until managers confirm they can independently spot errors in AI-generated work.

Total Tech Jobs Still Growing Even as Starter Roles Vanish

The entry-level squeeze coexists with a large New York tech sector. CompTIA's 2026 tech workforce forecast projects net U.S. tech employment growing 1.9 percent this year.

The Center for an Urban Future's new report focuses on recommendations for city leaders to redesign tech career on-ramps for low-income New Yorkers rather than resolving how quickly employers might restore junior hiring. New York's entry-level tech crunch echoes similar contractions Hoodline has tracked elsewhere, including a hiring wall facing Atlanta grads and an AI squeeze on Richmond workers, suggesting the entry-level tech ladder is fraying in cities well beyond New York.
