Oklahoma City is starting Wednesday clear and near 75°F, but the calm morning will give way to a punishing stretch of heat. The high is expected to reach 99°F, with sunny skies and a heat index near 103°F during the afternoon and early evening.
The National Weather Service expects south winds around 9 mph during the day, with stronger late-morning and afternoon gusts potentially reaching roughly 23 mph. Rain is not expected Wednesday, and the broader Oklahoma City forecast remains mostly dry through the weekend.
Triple-Digit Heat Settles In
Thursday should bring another sunny day with a high near 98°F and a heat index as high as 105°F. Friday is forecast to climb back to 99°F, followed by highs around 100°F Saturday, Sunday and Labor Day on Monday.
Overnight relief will be limited, with lows generally holding near 77°F to 78°F. Tuesday is expected to remain sunny and hot, with a high near 99°F, meaning the heat is not showing much interest in leaving town anytime soon.
Little Rain, Ongoing Fire Concern
Rain chances stay close to zero through Friday and rise only slightly over the weekend and early next week. The weather service says drought conditions and very dry vegetation will keep wildfire starts possible, even though increasing moisture could prevent fire-weather conditions from becoming more elevated.
Residents should limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, drink water regularly and check on older adults, young children and anyone without reliable cooling. Keep pets out of hot vehicles, and use extra caution with anything that could spark a fire around dry grass or brush.
