According to WKEF, Riverside Police responded to Sonora Grill in the 5000 block of Burkhardt Road Sunday evening after reports of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found two shooting victims at the scene. One victim was taken to Miami Valley Hospital for treatment, while the second victim was pronounced dead at the scene, per police.
Vehicle Tracked, Two People Detained
An officer at the scene obtained a description of a vehicle believed to be connected to the shooting and broadcast that information to responding officers and surrounding units, the outlet's report states. A short time later, officers located the vehicle and detained two people believed to be connected to the incident, according to police. Investigators have not released the identities of the victims or the two people held.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation, and police have not said what precipitated the gunfire inside or around the restaurant. No motive or timeline beyond Sunday evening has been disclosed.
Part of a Violent Weekend Across the Region
The Sonora Grill shooting occurred on Sunday, September 20, 2026, while the Montgomery County shootings described in whio.com occurred during the preceding weekend, September 11–13, 2026. Just before midnight Friday, police found a man who had been shot to death in someone's backyard on Riverside Drive in Dayton, and a 21-year-old man was shot in the leg on Kumler Avenue in Dayton on Saturday night, per the same report.
Three more people suffered non-life-threatening injuries in an early-morning shooting at an apartment complex on Gant Drive in Harrison Township, the station's report notes. Greg West of Felons with a Future told the outlet that the North Riverdale Area had gone 183 days without someone dying from gun violence in that area before the weekend's shootings.
Not the First Violent Case in Riverside
Riverside has seen deadly shootings draw police scrutiny before. In a 2020 double-homicide investigation, officers arrived shortly after 2:48 a.m. and found that two women, later identified by police as Ariana Middlebrook, 27, and Taprice Goodwin, 27, had been shot, according to WDTN. In that earlier case, police said they did not believe the incident was a random act of violence.
