A 16-year-old from Oroville admitted in Butte County Juvenile Court to firing at a group outside a party home on V-6 Road. The September 12 shooting left a 15-year-old with major injuries. The admission came during a hearing this week; the teen remains in juvenile custody and is scheduled to return to court for sentencing next month.

According to Action News Now, the juvenile admitted to discharging a firearm from a vehicle, a charge that caused great bodily injury to the 15-year-old victim. The report states the shooting happened as people were standing outside a party home on V-6 Road, and that the teen fired multiple shots before driving away from the party with four others.

Victim Remains Hospitalized Out of County

The Butte County District Attorney’s Office said the 15-year-old suffered major injuries and was taken to an out-of-county hospital. The victim remains hospitalized and is receiving treatment, according to the Butte County District Attorney’s Office.

The District Attorney’s Office said sheriff’s deputies located the vehicle and the group involved after the shooting. Two adults connected to the case have been charged with contributing to the delinquency of minors, while the Butte County Probation Department is handling two other teenagers separately, according to the Butte County District Attorney’s Office.

Sentencing Set for October, Wardship Could Stretch to Age 25

The 16-year-old is in Butte County Juvenile Hall and is scheduled to be sentenced in Butte County Juvenile Court on October 23. KRCR News Channel 7 reported that a two-to-four-year juvenile-hall term is possible.

The Butte County District Attorney’s Office said an adult prosecution could have exposed the teen to 32 years to life. The case is being prosecuted by the Butte County District Attorney’s Office.

California Youth Firearm-Injury Data

A statewide figure offers a snapshot, but not a year-to-year trend: According to California Department of Public Health EpiCenter data cited by Kidsdata.org, 341 firearm-injury hospitalizations for assault were recorded among California youth ages 15-19 in 2021. That single-year count does not show how such injuries changed in recent years.
