A pedestrian suffered serious injuries early Tuesday morning in a crash near Boulder Highway and Nellis Boulevard in east Las Vegas, prompting police to shut down the busy roadway while they investigated. The collision happened around 5:05 a.m., and medical personnel rushed the injured pedestrian to a hospital.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police reported that the crash occurred at that time near the intersection, according to KSNV. Boulder Highway was closed at Nellis Boulevard as investigators worked the scene, and police disclosed no other details about how the crash happened, who was involved, or the pedestrian's condition beyond describing the injuries as serious.
A Familiar Trouble Spot for Pedestrians
The stretch of Boulder Highway near Nellis Boulevard has seen multiple pedestrian crashes in recent years. In one prior incident, a woman pushing a stroller with a child was struck by a vehicle while crossing Boulder Highway at Nellis Boulevard; the woman and child were taken to a hospital with unspecified injuries, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. That same report noted a female pedestrian had been killed just a few blocks away only a day earlier, when a hit-and-run driver struck her and fled the scene.
The corridor has also seen fatal outcomes tied directly to the Nellis Boulevard intersection. In April 2017, a crash involving a marked LVMPD police vehicle and an adult female pedestrian occurred near Boulder Highway and Nellis Boulevard; medical personnel transported her to Sunrise Hospital, where she later died, according to a bulletin from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. The same intersection was also the scene of two separate crashes that left one pedestrian dead and another critically injured, the Review-Journal reported separately, after officers responded to a critical-injury crash involving a marked Metro vehicle and a pedestrian at 8:50 p.m. near South Nellis Boulevard and Boulder Highway; that victim was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Repeated Closures Along the Corridor
Road closures tied to pedestrian crashes on Boulder Highway are not unusual. In one instance, a pedestrian suffered minor injuries after being struck by a marked Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department vehicle, and southbound Boulder Highway was shut down to traffic for about three hours while police investigated, according to 8 News Now. It remains unclear how long Tuesday's closure lasted or when the roadway reopened to traffic.
Just weeks before this crash, a 45-year-old motorcyclist collided with a 15-year-old pedestrian on Boulder Highway south of Nellis Boulevard shortly after 5 p.m. on Dec. 12, and the motorcyclist died on Dec. 23 despite life-saving efforts, according to the Clark County Coroner's Office as reported by fox5vegas.com. Police said that death marked the 160th traffic-related fatality in 2025.
A Persistent Statewide Problem
Pedestrian crashes remain a significant safety issue across Nevada. The state recorded 387 pedestrian deaths between 2014 and 2018, and 79 pedestrian fatalities in 2018 alone, a decrease from 91 the year before, according to data from Zero Fatalities Nevada. The organization also notes that speed contributes to nearly a third of all traffic deaths statewide, while impaired driving remains the leading cause of motor vehicle crashes, injuries and fatalities in Nevada, accounting for 47% of total traffic deaths.
No cause has been determined for Tuesday's crash, and police have not released information about the driver, the vehicle involved, or any witnesses. The investigation into the pedestrian's serious injuries remains active, and no citations, arrests, or charges have been confirmed at this time.
