A pedestrian died after a crash in the southbound lanes of I-75/85 near University Avenue SW in Atlanta at about 4:55 a.m. Saturday, Atlanta police said, according to Atlanta News First.
Police have not explained what happened before the collision, identified the victim or announced any arrests. Authorities also have not said whether the vehicle or vehicles involved remained at the scene. Those details could change as the investigation continues.
A nearby crash last month
The death occurred less than a month after another fatal pedestrian collision near University Avenue. On Aug. 23, a man entered the northbound Downtown Connector and was struck by multiple vehicles, according to WSB-TV. Investigators said he may have been experiencing a mental-health crisis, and police did not release his name.
The two incidents occurred on opposite sides of the Connector near the same University Avenue area, but authorities have not publicly linked them or said they involved similar circumstances. The earlier crash therefore provides location context, not an explanation for Saturday’s death.
Nighttime is a broader pedestrian-safety concern
Saturday’s crash occurred before dawn, but its circumstances remain unknown. Nationally, the Governors Highway Safety Association reported that about 77% of pedestrians killed in fatal crashes in 2022 were struck at night, according to its 2023 pedestrian-fatality report. That statistic offers broader context and does not establish why the person was on the interstate or who was responsible in this case.
What records show about Connector improvements
Past planning documents show that pedestrian-oriented features have been considered around parts of the Connector, though they do not establish that those measures were completed at Saturday’s crash site. A 2012 draft analysis by the Atlanta Regional Commission proposed landscaping, lighting, fencing and furniture at locations where the Atlanta Streetcar interfaces with I-75/85, while noting proposed projects rather than documenting completed work, according to the commission document.
Midtown Alliance separately says a first phase of Connector gateway improvements included the Peachtree Street bridges, with the Peachtree Street North Bridge reaching substantial completion in November 2017. Its description places additional 10th Street Bridge work in the future and does not confirm improvements near University Avenue, according to the Midtown Alliance project page.
No public information cited here establishes that any proposed or completed project caused, prevented or otherwise relates to Saturday’s collision. Investigators have not disclosed the pedestrian’s identity, the events leading to the crash, whether a driver remained at the scene or whether charges are being considered.
