Two people died in unrelated traffic collisions across Sonoma County on Monday night, one a pedestrian struck while crossing a rural highway in the dark and the other a driver whose vehicle caught fire after leaving the roadway. Both crashes happened within roughly a half hour of each other, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The first crash was reported at 8:40 p.m. on State Route 116 near Sparkes Road, south of Sebastopol, according to NBC Bay Area. A pedestrian was attempting to cross the highway in the dark when an oncoming vehicle struck and killed them. CHP closed State Route 116 while investigators worked the scene.
Authorities estimated the highway would reopen at about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, per the same report. No further details on the driver, the pedestrian, or the vehicle involved were made available at the time.
Second Fatal Crash West of Petaluma
About a half hour later, at 9:13 p.m., a separate solo-vehicle crash was reported at 690 Tomales Road, in a rural stretch west of Petaluma. The station's report says the vehicle went off the roadway and caught fire, killing the driver. The fire also spread and ignited a grass fire nearby.
CHP said it would release more information about both fatal collisions on Tuesday, though as of this writing, additional details on the identities of those killed or the circumstances that led to either crash have not been disclosed.
Nighttime Pedestrian Crashes Remain a Persistent Risk
Crashes like the one on State Route 116 reflect a broader pattern in pedestrian fatalities nationwide. Nearly 74 percent of pedestrian deaths occur at non-intersection locations, where roadway design and speed often play an outsized role, according to the Federal Highway Administration. That statistic does not speak to what happened south of Sebastopol specifically, but it underscores why unlit, high-speed rural corridors like Route 116 can be especially dangerous for anyone on foot after dark.
For now, the two Sonoma County deaths remain under investigation, with CHP expected to share more Tuesday. No coroner's information, case numbers, or details about the vehicles and drivers involved in either collision have been made public.
