Phoenix woke Tuesday to mostly clear skies and temperatures near 88 degrees, but the brief morning comfort will not last. An Extreme Heat Warning begins at 10 a.m. Tuesday as the Valley heads toward an afternoon high near 108 degrees.
Three More Days Of Dangerous Heat
Tuesday will be sunny with light southwest winds, followed by a high near 106 degrees Wednesday and 107 degrees Thursday. Overnight lows will remain stuck around 87 to 88 degrees, leaving homes, pavement and people with little chance to cool down.
The National Weather Service Phoenix says the warning covers the Phoenix metropolitan area through 8 p.m. Thursday, with afternoon temperatures generally between 105 and 109 degrees. Heat-related illness can develop quickly, especially for people working outdoors, older adults, young children and anyone without reliable air conditioning.
Storm Chances Rise By Friday
A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms arrives Thursday evening, then increases to 40% Friday. Friday should be somewhat cooler at 104 degrees, but storms could bring strong wind gusts, blowing dust, lightning and brief heavy rain, with rainfall totals between a tenth and a quarter of an inch possible.
The weekend brings a modest cooldown, with a high near 101 degrees Saturday and 100 degrees Sunday. A slight chance of storms lingers Saturday morning, while another chance returns Monday as temperatures ease toward 99 degrees.
Cooling Help Remains Available
People who need a break from the heat can use the countywide Heat Relief Network, which includes cooling centers, respite spaces and hydration stations through September 30. Maricopa County advises residents to call 2-1-1 or use the regional map to find nearby assistance, including transportation options.
For now, the safest plan is to limit strenuous outdoor activity during the afternoon, drink water regularly and take frequent breaks in shade or air conditioning. Confusion, fainting or severe overheating are medical emergencies; move the person to a cool place and call 911.
