According to KATU, a large presence of officers gathered at the scene in the 9600 block of Southeast Stark Street after the shooting was reported. The outlet reported the news Thursday and labeled it a developing story, meaning key facts about the incident had not yet been confirmed publicly.
KATU reported that a PPB spokesperson called it a “critical incident” near SE 97th and Stark and that authorities had closed Stark Street for the investigation. Details about the circumstances of the shooting, who may have been involved, or whether anyone was hurt remain unclear.
Same Block Was Scene of a Homicide in 2022
The 9600 block of SE Stark Street has drawn police attention before. On January 30, 2022, at 1:46 a.m., Portland police were dispatched to that same block for a reported shooting involving a weapon, according to eastpdxnews.com. Officers responding to that call found a man dead of apparent gunshot wounds about a block away, on SE Oak Street just east of 97th Avenue.
The Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office later identified that man as 35-year-old Dramane Griffin and ruled his death a homicide by gunshot wound, per the same outlet's reporting. Police said at the time that the suspect or suspects had fled before officers arrived, and no arrests had been made in that case as of the report's publication.
