Geary Public Schools canceled classes for all students on Friday after a power outage left Geary Elementary without electricity. District officials did not immediately say when electricity would be restored.
According to the district, Geary Elementary School was without power, and classes were canceled at both Geary Elementary School and Geary Middle School-High School during the outage, as reported by News 9. The outlet reported that the restoration timeline remained unknown. Geary Public Schools is a small rural district serving roughly 255 students across Blaine and Canadian counties in western Oklahoma, according to Ballotpedia.
A District Already Mid-Transition
The outage lands at a busy moment for the district. Buchanan has led the district since he was appointed by the board of education in June 2021, after previously serving as principal of Geary Elementary School, the Watonga Republican reported at the time.
The district has also been weighing a separate, unrelated facilities question this year. In July, Geary Public Schools surveyed local residents about whether to enter a proposed 50-year lease to renovate city-owned athletic fields or instead spend district funds on new school-owned facilities, according to the district's Facebook page. Those tax-dollar decisions for capital improvements are kept separate from classroom operations, but they underscore how much building and infrastructure work the district is juggling this year.

Electrical service in Geary runs through the City of Geary Utility Authority, which contracts with the Oklahoma Municipal Power Authority to supply wholesale power to the municipal grid, according to City of Geary. That structure means restoration after an outage depends on local municipal crews working with the regional wholesale supplier rather than a large investor-owned utility.
The outage also comes on the heels of rough weather across the region. News 9 severe weather chasers tracked thunderstorm wind gusts exceeding 65 mph across western Oklahoma communities, including nearby Okarche and Kingfisher, during storm activity earlier this month. Late-summer storms in the area frequently cause localized line and transformer damage.

Geary sits within a region experiencing sharp demographic change. Canadian County, which encompasses part of the Geary school district's service area, reached an estimated population of 187,189 residents by 2025, remaining one of Oklahoma's fastest-growing counties, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, even as neighboring rural stretches of Blaine County retain a much smaller footprint.
