A new burrito shop is squaring off against its biggest rival right across the street in Travelers Rest. Qdoba is opening its third Greenville County location and sixth statewide at 40 Krieger Court, Suite B, with a grand opening set for Wednesday, September 2, and daily hours running from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.
The spot sits directly across from Caribou Coffee and Chipotle Mexican Grill, according to The Post and Courier Greenville, setting up a head-to-head matchup between two of the country's biggest fast-casual Mexican chains. Chipotle beat Qdoba to the neighborhood, opening its own Travelers Rest location at 571 Roe Center Court in late 2024, according to the Upstate Business Journal.
The two chains take very different approaches to growth. Qdoba operates primarily through franchising, with roughly 80% of its stores owned by franchisees who must bring at least $350,000 in liquid capital and a $1 million net worth to the table, per the same outlet's reporting on the brand's franchise strategy. Chipotle, by contrast, stopped selling franchises back in 2006 and runs all of its more than 3,500 locations as corporate-owned units.
A Franchisee Betting Big on the Carolinas
The new location is operated by Thrive Restaurant Group, the franchisee behind Qdoba's operations here. Wichita, Kansas-based Thrive runs more than 200 restaurants across 18 states, a portfolio that also includes Applebee's franchises, Modern Market Eatery, HomeGrown, Bakesale, and Carlos O'Kelly's, according to background compiled from Thrive Restaurant Group.
Thrive signed a 30-unit development agreement with Qdoba in July 2024 to expand rapidly across North and South Carolina, with Greenville, Columbia, and Myrtle Beach named as key target markets, per Qdoba Franchise. Thrive CEO Jon Rolph pointed to a long-standing business relationship with Qdoba CEO John Cywinski as a catalyst for the deal. Cywinski said in a statement that Qdoba is thrilled to welcome Thrive Restaurant Group and expand its mission throughout the greater Greenville, South Carolina, market, as reported by The Post and Courier Greenville.
The Travelers Rest restaurant is expected to add 25 jobs to the area. Thrive employs more than 8,000 workers nationwide and has reported a 57% reduction in employee turnover through data-driven workforce management programs, according to company information shared in a YouTube video detailing its hiring operations.
Why Travelers Rest Keeps Landing on Chains' Radar
Travelers Rest was Greenville County's fastest-growing municipality between 2010 and 2020, with U.S. Census Bureau data showing the population surge 70% from 4,570 to 7,788 residents, according to the Greenville Journal. City officials have noted that part of that jump came from the 2012 annexation of Furman University's campus.
That growth hasn't been left to chance. Municipal planners intentionally steer major commercial developments and chain restaurants toward the U.S. Highway 25 corridor, where Krieger Court and Roe Center Court sit, while preserving Main Street for walkable small businesses, the Greenville Journal reports. The approach reflects different intended uses for Main Street and the Highway 25 corridor.
Qdoba's pitch to Travelers Rest diners centers on value: the chain includes hand-crafted guacamole and its signature 3-Cheese Queso at no extra charge on create-your-own entrees, a differentiator Hoodline previously covered when the chain expanded into Olney, Maryland.
A Statewide and National Growth Streak
The Travelers Rest opening brings Qdoba's South Carolina count to six locations, joining existing sites in Greenville, Mauldin, Easley, and Columbia, according to the company's own location listings. Statewide growth mirrors the brand's national trajectory, which included opening its 800th restaurant in Miami in 2025.
Qdoba has said it is on track to reach 1,600 locations by 2032, per company statements cited by The Post and Courier Greenville. That target traces back to Qdoba's August 2022 acquisition by Los Angeles-based private equity firm Butterfly Equity, which bought the chain from Apollo Global Management and folded it into Modern Restaurant Concepts alongside Modern Market Eatery and Lemonade, according to Restaurant Dive.
For now, the more immediate contest plays out on Krieger Court, where Travelers Rest diners will soon find Qdoba and Chipotle across the street from each other.
