According to WKMG, the plume is being described as rare. NOAA's National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service says Saharan Air Layer activity typically peaks between late June and mid-August before subsiding.
The dust isn't just an atmospheric curiosity — it's coinciding with one of the strangest hurricane seasons in decades, as the Atlantic basin remains unusually calm.
How Dust Chokes Off Storms Before They Start
The suppression isn't a mystery to atmospheric scientists. Warmth, dryness, and strong winds can suppress tropical cyclone formation and intensification. The drying effect is compounded by upper-level wind shear this year, helping keep the Atlantic basin suppressed.
The numbers back up just how quiet things have been. NOAA updated its seasonal outlook in August, offering context for the unusually quiet start to 2026.
Why Florida Feels Hotter When the Sky Turns Hazy
For residents on the ground, the dust doesn't just mean hazy sunsets — it can also affect rain and heat. In August, WSVN 7News and Local 10 noted that when Saharan dust hovers over the state, it can suppress widespread rain and contribute to elevated heat-index values.

The Health Risks Hiding in the Haze
Beyond the heat, the dust carries a public-health dimension because it can contribute to poor air quality during dense events.
The scale of these plumes is hard to overstate. NOAA satellite tracking shows the Saharan Air Layer travels between 5,000 and 20,000 feet above the surface, forming an atmospheric layer 2 to 2.5 miles thick that can cover an area as large as the lower 48 United States. Trade winds deliver new plumes across the Atlantic every three to five days during peak months.
