Richmond County law enforcement wrapped up a 45-day crackdown on gangs, guns and drugs with 145 arrests, including 79 felony arrests and 30 suspected criminal street gang members taken into custody. Deputies say the sweep, dubbed Operation Wildfire, also led to the seizure of dozens of firearms, several vehicles, tens of thousands of dollars in cash and more than a pound of fentanyl.
A Six-Week Push Against Violent Crime
Operation Wildfire ran from July 22 through September 5, according to WJBF, which described it as a 45-day proactive enforcement initiative. The operation was led by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Gang Unit, and deputies said it targeted violent offenders, criminal street gang activity, illegal firearms and narcotics trafficking across the county, as reported by WRDW. FBI Atlanta said the effort also targeted wanted suspects and individuals tied to gang activity, illegal firearms and narcotics trafficking, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
Of the 145 total arrests, investigators reported 79 felony arrests and the apprehension of 30 suspected criminal street gang members, per the same WRDW account. The sheriff's office received assistance from a wide roster of agencies, including the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Georgia Department of Community Supervision, the Georgia Attorney General's Office, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the Georgia State Patrol, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
Guns, Cash and a Pound of Fentanyl Off the Streets
Deputies and assisting agencies seized 54 firearms, four vehicles and $44,811 in cash during the operation, WRDW reported. On the narcotics side, the operation resulted in the seizure of 527.44 grams — 1.16 pounds — of fentanyl and 30,091.31 grams, or 66.33 pounds, of marijuana, according to WJBF's tally released at the operation's close.
FOX 5 Atlanta additionally reported that officers seized more than 450 grams of cocaine, 106 grams of methamphetamine, 386 oxycodone pills and 16 alprazolam pills. Taken together, the drug haul spanned fentanyl, marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine and prescription pills, a mix WRDW's reporting also characterized as central to the operation's seizures.
Sheriff, FBI Frame the Operation as a Warning
Richmond County Sheriff Eugene Brantley released a statement following the operation, saying it demonstrates the sheriff's office's commitment to protecting the community, according to FOX 5 Atlanta. Brantley added that the sheriff's office will continue pursuing people who threaten community safety, the outlet reported.
Federal officials echoed that message, with the FBI stating it remains committed to working with its partners to disrupt violent crime and hold dangerous offenders accountable, per FOX 5 Atlanta's reporting, which drew on social media posts from FBI Atlanta and the Richmond County Sheriff's Office. Authorities have not released a full roster of the 145 people arrested, nor have they detailed specific pending court dates for those charged during the operation.
